Early Access - Tank Busting

Hey all,

Attached is the promised update on the Tank busting video for the 25th of March. Sadly, I didn't get a sign off by the sponsor last week as I had hoped, but it is in now so enjoy!

Hope you like this one - based once again on German primary docs!

All the best,
Chris

Early Access - Tank Busting

Comments

As usual, great video Chris. I didn’t realise how much specialised ammunition had been developed for specific purposes such as tank busting. Thanks for the simplification of German designation into legible English/Euro-speak and your COVID haircut has made me feel better about my efforts cutting my own hair in these desperate times 😂 I have a lot of your posts to catch up with, so don’t worry about output... it’s all good mate 👍

The main issue with hitting the top armor is that you require a steep angle. At a more conventional angle of 25 degrees, teh deck armor might actually be as, if not more difficult to penetrate than the sides due to the increase in protection due to armor and the respective angle cousing rounds to bounce.

Hey Sean, I don't tjhink anyone ever went out to combine all the kill claims into a single figure. As for the effectiveness, they were less effective at 'destroying' (so literally destroying) tanks but of course had the advantage of being very flexible and mobile.

Hi, Chris, First, you cracked me up with "our proud history of being rubbish at acronyms." Thank you for that. I'm soory that I'm too "special" to remember which day is MAHD, but I'm doing well to catch up on Patreon even twice each week. Now, about 30 mm anti-tank, airborne cannons Why didn't some German tankers tell the Luftwaffe "Never mind amining at the sides. Shoot through the thin decking on the top." I think that's the preferred method for the A-10 Warthog, which also uses a 30 mm cannon. Any plans for something of a longitudinal study, with examination of tank-busting over the years? I still loved this, especially how thorough you are, and how you admit the limitations in your research. I really loved the way you addressed future weapons testers. I wonder what pinhead mixed different rounds in the same burst.

Thanks for covering this subject with you usual attention to detail! As for MAD, I've heard much worse acronyms in my day! At least yours means something to the channel. I'll be looking forward to your upcoming videos on the F104, a plane I fell in love with in the 60's as a boy, and the F35! I'm sure you'll be giving us more great content on those planes. :)

Thanks for this discussion, Chris. Really enjoyed getting the detailed test data on using the MK101. As always, no matter how much information you provide, I have more questions afterward. For example, are there any estimates for how many tanks were destroyed by the Luftwaffe using cannon? Is there any consensus on how effective aerial attack with cannon was vs. other ground-based weapons (tanks, AT guns, hand-held weapons...)? I look forward to your planned videos on the F-104, one of my all time favorite aircraft, and the F-35, which is in the midst of an interesting discussion right now regarding its effectiveness as a multirole/multiservice fighter. Cheers!
