From Wreck to Restored & Flying WW2 Fighter

Hey all,

As mentioned recently, today's video is a sponsored episode hence why I could only give a 'shorter' early access to it. The video revolves around the 1,100 Supermarine Spitfires Mk IX sent to the Soviet Union (thus it is an annex to another video I made some time ago) during World War 2. All of these planes were thought lost until the turn of the century when one was found and made it back as a wreck. Now, in 2020, it was restored into flying condition!

I was meant to go and visit the aircraft, and film it at its airport. Sadly Covid-19 restrictions meant that that wasn't possible. However, the sponsor and owner have thankfully provided some footage of the aircraft for you to enjoy.

The sponsor of this episode, REC Watches, has partnered with the owner of the aircraft and sells watches that contain a piece of the original aircraft. As part of the Black Friday sale, they have a discount on their watches but - if you are interested - with the code 'PT879' you will get more than 24h advanced access to the sale! All details in the description of the video.

Hope you enjoy this video!
Chris

My mother gave me a solar powered watch that may last me the rest of my life, and it is from her. Even had I watched this before the Black Friday sale, I am satisfied that I've done what I can afford to do, by supporting your channel, and being such an apt partner for this restoration and maintenance effort. :)

Biz, noice choice of sponsership. Don't think that they could have found a channel/content creator that was more on topic for their presumed target audience.

Chris, thanks so much for this great video. I lived in England for several years as a child (my father was stationed at an RAF base) and so much of the history of WWII was all around us (my school was a former Italian POW camp). I really got into the history, and have simply loved Spitfires and Hurricanes in particular since then. This video alone was worth the price of my subscription to Patreon! Thanks so much, I really enjoyed watching and look forward to your next treat! - Sean

Hey Dave, the story of X4492 seems quite complicated and it was modified multiple times (Mk I -> V,IV, -> VII etc). Those features seem to be artifacts from that.

At 3:42, you have a photo of aircraft X4492, with several features that seem odd to me. First, the nose has a downward bulge that changes its shape. Second, what appears to be the lower air intake has some sort of structure around its front. Finally, there appear to be extra fins projecting down from the bottom of the wing. Do you know what the purpose is for any or all of those?
