New Video: What the Germans thought about Italian Fighter planes

Hey all,

In this video I have a look at a summary from the Luftwaffe on comparison flights between German Bf 109s and Fw 190, against four different Italian machines. The German's even identify a favourite - but which one is it?

Big thank you to all of you who allow me to understake the research trips that result in these videos!

Thanks John! Yes, it's interesting to see how 'multi-roll' is a theme that comes around, goes around.

Thanks for another great video, Chris! I had not known that the Luftwaffe even considered adopting Italian aircraft in WWII. It was interesting to hear the criteria they wanted at the time, like wanting fighters that could easily be fighter-bombers. That is not unlike the US in the 1950's until John Boyd's studies in the 1960's that led to the F15 and then the F16... It reminds me of some of the comments I heard from Israeli AF folks about their desire to modify the F15's they bought from the US later to meet their own needs.

Hey Miguel, I'd have to check the actual timeline of things, but I think production continued in parts. I'd have to check though

Hey Gary, yes this is one of those interesting twists of history. Certainly worth a video when I can make it

On the German analysis on the Italian fighters. Could it have done not to decide if producing them in Germany made sense, but instead to decide if to keep them under production and development at the Italian factories Germany took over after the Italian capitulation?

Yes, please, keep using and translating original reports. It’s always intriguing and interesting learning about what they were thinking back then.

I have seen an early Israeli-produced movie about the origin of its air force during the 1948 war. They used modified Chek-made109s with non-standard engines that Stalin permitted Israel to buy, along with combat arms. Stalin also supported the recognition of Israel at the UN. The story could be of interest to you fans. I'll try to locate a link if you wish. gary
