Early Access: WW2 Flares on Me 262

Following the Inside The Cockpit on the Me262 Part 2, one question kept popping up: 'Why did the Me 262 need flares'? Well, this seems to have been a issue where the modern use of 'flares' cause some confusion.
Here is your Early Access to a bit of a clarification.

Thanks for the added detail. I remember seeing a painting of a B-17 coming in for a landing, firing flares to indicate there were wounded on board.
