Continuing on (I keep forgetting that the "Enter" key does what it advertises - posts the comment rather than just giving you a carriage return). From experience on IL-2 Great Battles, the Sturmovik is less of a "flying tank" and more of a flying (open topped) tank destroyer. I.E. - it is pretty tough against fire from below or even to the sides, but very vulnerable from above. Typically the first burst nails your control rods to the elevators, and you are done. I will say I have never lost a pilot to gunfire with the canopy closed. (Although then you can't see anything except to the front, and Yuri your tail gunner is not very communicative on what is going on behind and above you.)

Much appreciated. Evolution of Soviet aircraft is relatively easy to trace, but evolution of tactics is far more elusive. Dr. Toeppel's critical examination of the existing sources and conventional wisdom is very valuable. The key element being that Kursk was where the Russians learned that low-level fighter escort is pretty useless.
