Sneakpeak: German Federal Archives

Hey all,

The second day at the German Federal Archives in Freiburg comes to a close and it's been a productive day. Since yesterday, I took about 4000 pictures - going through as many documents as I can that are relevant to my future projects. Within them, there are quite a few gems but as always with archives, the challenge is to quickly separate the beans from the peas, so you optimize your time and photographing. Tomorrow, I have another day to sift through the remaining documents that I ordered today.

I am quite happy with my progress. I finished all pre-ordered documents this afternoon and had enough time to order new one's from tomorrow. As you never know what you get in some of these files, there are cases where I was surprised and amazed at what I found while in other cases I was a bit disappointed as I had expected something different. Overall, neither time nor effort was wasted however.

Broadly speaking I looked into three different categories:

- Sturzkampfgewaders / Ju-87
- Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine relations and cooperation
- Development of the Luftwaffe 1920s-1939

Beyond that, I found random tidbits on the Me262, some of the radar developments, the pre-war planning and a couple of maps of the targets set out for the LW in various countries. As I type this, I am starting to file all my pictures into folders and PDF's to be catalogues at home, as tomorrow after the archive I am heading straight to Switzerland to film for 'INSIDE THE COCKPIT'.

If you have any questions, let me know!

Hey Bill, is this for the Lens clip?

Military Aviation History

I did all that to get out of writing a 5-page paper for a history class. That was back in 1978, in my senior year of high school, and I was clinically depressed, but wouldn't be diagnosed for about a decade. About 20 years ago, I went into remission, mostly from jokes told during tabletop role-playing, and was able to go back to college, and succeed.

Haha, luckily smoke and daggers was not necessary. Yet.

Wow that's quite a list, did you record all these things? Sounds like it did help you pass a strainous time, happy to hear this

Darn. I have to download an app ... to my laptop??? I'm not sure how that works. I'll wait for when I can just play it in Patreon.

Reminds me of the time, back when I was too depressed to write anything, and at least a decade before electronic text file processing, when I skimmed through about 5,000 pages of original sources, in a really good small town library, including Churchill's series of volumes on WW2, and books by Guderian and Mannstein (spelling?). It was all to get positions of corps and army sized units, to use the old Avalon Hill game, Rise and Decline of the Third Reich, for a series of 35 mm color slides, illustrating ground, air, and sea movement throughout the war. Wish I knew where those slides went.

Of course, i imagine you, sneaking around in there with a Minox camera. Haha.

Bis, this sounds fascinating! Cannot wait for your research to make it onto new films. Per ardua ad astra!
