Hey all,
Most of you will probably have seen the previous sneakpeak on the Japanese fleet disposition at Lea-Salamaua on 10 March 1942. If not, check it out here. (The final animation looks slightly different and has a new voice over to be more accurate with the Japanese ship names).
Thus, you might recognise the map above. I recreated the strike in IL-2 1946 for filming some of the visuals in the video. This includes the correct location, date and weather (as far as I can tell), as well as all the targets and planes. The planes coming in will be increased if need be (right now, its about 50% of Lexington's strike force) but the planes are striking the ships in the correct positions (give or take a few yards). The exception is the Kiyokawa Maru and the DD Mochizuki that are locatied a bit more West than during the real strike but this is done out of necessity. Those ships that I understood to have got underway will also be moving, as well as additional small vessels for ambiance. The Japanese AA battery is also recreated.
I've been doing this for videos in the IL-2 1946 editor for about a year now. This way the footage will not just be representative of what happened but be as close to the real thing that I can get it.
Doing this, I did run into a bit of a bump. After trying to mod IL-2 1946 a bit further for the purposes of this video, it gave up on me completely and required a fresh install. After cleaning it all up, I've reset the game, modded it with the basic necessities and then added the required planes if need be (TBD-1 and E7K). Sadly, there is no model for the Japanese E8N that saw action at Lae-Salamaua in the game nor has anybody ever modelled it. Luckily, I have a representative stand-in with the E7K which looks virtually similar if it wasn't for the third crew member...
Any questions? Let me know!
