Five quick updates

Hey all,

A lot has happened which accounts for my silence over the last week. So here is the run down and an overdue update for all of you.

I am back in Finland and will most likely head over to the Finnish Aviation Museum once more to film some of their exhibits. As you guys know, I've been in steady contact with them regarding content and they are extremely open to it.

However, there are some problems. First off, the lighting in the museum is not ideal and with my limited equipment (considering flights etc), this makes filming a challenge. In the future, this might improve (and the museum might change internally) but this was the main issue on my last visit which is why I haven't posted anything from it yet (except for the pitot tube video). Considering some of the other related content on YT (not necessarily planes but also tanks and ships), I am wondering if I am not pushing the bar a bit too high for myself but I really don't like posting videos that don't live up to my own expectation.

My idea for now is to try to get into the cockpit of the SAAB J35 Draken (just as last time) and film some of that. Likewise, I am trying to get something in the Fi 156 Storch, and a museum tour. It might be that some of these videos will indeed become Patreon exclusives if I can't post them on the channel but this remains to be seen.

As for the video on the Swiss Air Force, it is currently on hold as I am abroad but it will come out in November. I am trying to set it up as the next upgrade to my content, so lots of work goes into it. With every idea and experiment, there is doubt of course but overall I am happy of the progress made.

Another limited edition T-Shirt is set to be slotted for November, shipping out before Christmas. Writing this update is effectively my break from creating the required art which is about 25% done. Perhaps in the coming days I can show all of you the final design :)

Boy, would you believe it: Old Bismarck got a Partner Manager at YouTube. After a somewhat confusing first call with a friendly person in San Fransisco at the YT head office, I was put into contact with a Partner Manager in London where I currently live. We had our first chat last week and another one slotted for tomorrow. A Partner Manager is a 'direct line' to YT for anyone over 100k subscribers (even though it took since June to get one).

It's hard to say where things are heading at the moment but I've raised some points with her on how it feels to be a educational YTer (focusing on military aspects) and she was surprisingly receptive (just rams home the fact how crucial an actual human discussion is) and seemed very much informed over the challenges I have. I'll keep ya'll posted on how things develop.

There is a chance that I will do my first Sponsorship video the upcoming November. As you all know, my standard practice is to immediately decline offers of products that I think are absolutely irrelevant to my channel. An example: I was offered a sponsorship for a Viking mobile game some time ago, to which I felt that putting that in front of an analysis of the Luftwaffe during Operation X or the USAAF in 194X is nothing short but [redacted]. (These kind of offers come near weekly btw). I know it doesn't stop other channels but this is my channel, so its my rules even if I might lose some (considerable) dosh from it. However, there are some products out there that have an overlap, either by being educational, helpful or thematically suited. Thus, I have entered negotiations with a company after they contacted me. As I have little time at the moment, it is all very much in flux and I need to still hear back from them. You'll be the first to know of course.

Right, that be 'all' for now :)

Any questions or feedback, I'd be delighted to hear it!!!

Thanks, hope you got some good rest :)

rEALLY TIRED, RIGHT NOW ... and I'll leave that the way I accidentally typed it, Am removing the typos, as hard to read. Word looks good. Understand there are technical difficulties. It's okay by me. Thanks.

Bill Lemmond

Sadly no, next time!

Military Aviation History

Were you able to take the gimbal?

Jack Ray

Not sure if they still do that. I have looked into renting a light source or two but up here, the price is ludicrous, as are the conditions. I've been in contact with the museum and we might have found a solution though.

For the museum videos, well, I used to do professional photography, and Nikon Professional Services (NPS) had arrangements for borrowing equipment around the country for a pittance (given what the equipment was worth). Perhaps supplemental lighting can be arranged locally for videographers?

Phil Moyer

Sounds good!

Hey Stanimir, Great suggestion, thanks for that. It should definitely be possible. I still have a lot to learn with cameras but we are getting there!

Hey mensch1066, Thanks for the feedback, and I agree, many products simply make no sense and I feel would even be detrimental to the content. So yes, keeping it in line with the content is the plan. Of course, there aren't 'many' companies out there that do something aviation related which is why I am generally ok to discuss 'thematic overlaps' i.e. WW2 etc as long as I have the liberty to chose my own video and it makes sense to tie it to aviation somehow. For this example, it would not be with WT but a similar game based on ground vehicles. However, some of the weapons used in that game do have an aviation twist which would make for a neat video which I was going to make eventually anyway.

I can't speak for anyone else but I would be fine with you doing sponsorships to keep the channel afloat as long as they relate to aviation. So yeah, War Thunder ads would be ok in my book. Glad you declined those offers for the Vikings mobile game - those people are so insistent and so tiresome.

Hi Bismark, Can't wait for that Draken video! It's a favorite fighter of mine. By the way, as a friendly suggestion, further down the line you can try to experiment with filming with a fisheye lens while you are doing the in-cockpit footage. Depending on the camera you use, there are some lenses of that type that will not cost you much (especially bought second hand) and allow you to see whether you like the look. Also congratulations on getting the Youtube Partner Manager! I hope it is a helpful experience.
