Inside a TBM Avenger

Comments

Surprise always works, but I think the most crucial was really have no enemy fighters appear. Flak was bad enough, but aerial interception worse.

Thanks for this careful, thorough, and sweaty look at the Avenger. From Taranto and Pearl Harbor, I get the impression that with their long. straight attack runs, torpedo bombers needed substantial surprise to succeed without serious losses. Is that generally true?

It's possible I'll tackle that, yes :)

Thanks for an internal trip to Avenger. I never knew about belly machine gun. Will you have a topic on carrier-based aircraft? Was Japanese torpedo bomber Nakajima B5N "Kate" better? Is there any record of fighter tactics to diffed bombers on their way to the target? How was carrier air deference organized?
