Book review: Birth of the RAF (Richard Overy/ Ian Philpott)

Hey all,

Sat down this morning to make good my accidental deletion of the audio file the other day with a full retake of the book review.

For a short synopsis:

Both Richard Overy's and Ian Philpott's book revolve around the  formation of the RAF on 1st April 1918.
Recently published, Overy's book  tells history in a compact manner, enough to allow the reader to  understand the general history but nevertheless lacking in depth and  context. Considering it was published most likely as a quick-read, this is not all too surprising.
Philpott's book is different. Presenting a complete study from pre-WW1  British aviation (+ balloons) over to the formation of the RAF, the book  also recounts organisation, adminsitration, equipment, training and  basing of the worlds oldest air force. It is a serious read for the  interested.

Hope you enjoy,

Bis

Hey Bill, if you are in the UK, I am sure libraries stock these books. Maybe you'll have to request them to be brought in from another library in the county. Sometimes that's an option. Otherwise talk to the libraries, often they are receptive to new book suggestions.

Thanks for the reviews. Wow, those may actually be good prices for books, but my income has been falling behind for decades, thanks to the way most employers regard disabilities. I'll have to depend on local libraries.
