Obviously Ellie is talking about her own relationship with Quinn, and how Quinn had no reason to give her a second chance. Even less so, really.
There's been plenty of times I've forgiven people I probably didn't have to. Sometimes in the presence of others, then asked 'why' by the friendly observer. The idea it was undeserved being held in the same regard. Because I need to. I need to forgive people with the same amount of forgiveness I require from everyone else. And that is no small amount. It's easier to hold a grudge. To keep someone held in a locked state of punishment through silence. It's harder to pluck out the good, and see if that can't be cultivated. To be patient, even when that emotional well has been completely exhausted.
We need way more patience in the world today. We live in a society so unwilling to forgive even the slightest of slights. A culture of no-redemption. We can't even settle for current infractions. We'll go back 1,000 years into family history to find any form of moral repugnance. History is a messy thing. You will never find a pristine, sterilized time where everything was perfect. Same goes for people and their personal histories.
Anyone can be redeemed... and just as importantly, the rest of us can get the hell out of the way and allow them to be.
