They could have split off a search team led by the teacher the first or second day while having the other part stay behind to take care of the injured. They acted as if they were stranded on a fucking island with no civilization around at all. If they went on the second or third day the food supply would have been much better and it would provide more of a chance for both the search team and the team left behind while saving time.
