Totally agree, a lot of Deus ex machina, some even unnecessary like one describing a red thing, that was one thing, but in the end when they explained it turned out it was another one, and both would be useful to fix the situation since both were Deus ex machina anyway. I also end up reading DD1, but i left the last 20 episodes cause it as starting to be cringy or me, didn't want to ruin the experience.

I typed a long reply to you and it suddenly disappeared. Damn! Long story short, yes I do recommend that you read the novel. It's the shortest among all the DD series and DD is easily my fav among all the 4 sequels (DD, DD2, DD3, DD4 & DD5). Yes, I've read them all, including the sub-sequels (DD2.5 & DD3.5). Tang San is definitely the most compelling MC of all the DD series. The donghua is following the novel to a T, well almost. I don't think it will take away the suspense and enjoyment from your watching simply because at the rate the donghua is going, it will easily take another 1-1.5 years until the finale. Surely you can finish reading 300+ chapters by then? 😉 My only gripe is the last part of the novel. The ending is simply a disaster. This opinion is echoed by everyone who has read it. The major complaint being: deus-ex-machina and ridiculous plot armours given to one "female character". But then again, if you have no problem with said female character until now, then you probably won't find her problematic. So, do check the novel out! Btw, I recommend bluesilvertranslations. Oh, and CrimsonFanSubs is the only translator who uses the original terms from bluesilvertranslations.

You are right about the subs, I watched it on Crimsonfansubs and so far they have the best subs of what I've seen. You said you read the novel, did you only read the first novel which is the current story of the Donghua or did you read all 5 novels and 2?3? extras? I started reading the first one but it's too long. I plan on reading them all but I'm scared I'll get old before finishing them lol.

Just subscribed to your Patreon. I love your genuine and lighthearted reaction! I'm a big fan of the donghua since 2019. It was not easy waiting for a 15mins episode once a week for 2 years and of course, I ended up binge-reading the novel. I love seeing how others react to it for the first time reminiscing of my own experience on how I got addicted. I've also lost count on how many times I've watched all the episodes, on every available anime websites and YouTube just to see which one has the best subs. So far, Tencent channel on YT has the best English subs. The only minor gripe I have about the subs is the contraction of the character names. You may have noticed, they always use "Wu" instead of "Xiao Wu" and this applies to almost every other names as well. Oh, and the so-called "heinous spirit" is so terribly off. It should be translated as "killing aura" or "slaughter energy". There's absolutely nothing heinous or evil about it. By the way, your understanding and insight on the storyline and plot development has always been quite spot on. Keep it up, mate! Will be eagerly waiting for the next episodes. Oh, feel free to ask me anything about the story or the characters, I'll try my best to keep it spoiler free.
