SPOILERS! If you haven’t read Chapter 12 yet, you should do so before reading further.
First, Nyx transformed Diane into some sort of draconic monster-girl with predatory instincts. Then, Reiko the kunoichi claimed Diane as a familiar, turning her into little more than a glorified pet. If that wasn’t humiliating enough, she was subsequently reduced to an inanimate object; an amulet that now dangled around Reiko’s neck. Yet Diane discovered that as Reiko’s familiar, she apparently gained the ability to subconsciously influence her new mistress.
Diane used that power to encourage Reiko to take the more dangerous sewer route during her escape from the Dancing Duchess. On their way down to the sewers, they discovered that the Dancing Duchess had been built above an ancient crypt, haunted by none other than the ghost of Queen Ysabeau the Fair (or the Fallen, depending on your point of view), who had been overthrown centuries earlier within the history of the game’s universe.
The usurpers had chopped up Ysabeau’s body and scattered her remains across the realm to ensure she could never rest in peace. The Queen has asked Reiko to recover and reunite her remains so that she could finally find peace in the afterlife. Diane is torn; on the one hand, Ysabeau worshipped Nyx in life, and so Diane feels compelled to help the Queen. On the other hand, the knowledge Diane inherited from her alter ego, Maddy, suggests Ysabeau cannot be trusted.
