As the city guard prepared to assault the Dancing Duchess, the adventurers and their new ally, the vampire Fanglord, planned their escape. While Reiko’s friends could simply walk out the inn’s front door, her demonic appearance necessitated an alternate escape route. Reiko ordered her new familiar, Diane, to adopt a “less conspicuous” form that would not hamper her efforts to sneak out of the building. This command had resulted in Diane shapeshifting into a magical amulet, which now dangled from a thread around Reiko’s neck.
Fanglord had offered Reiko two potential escape routes: the easier path, up to the roof of the Dancing Duchess and from there to the roof of a neighboring building; and the more difficult path, down into the city sewers, where unknown dangers awaited. Diane felt drawn to the sewer route, for reasons she could not explain. Were Diane to exploit the subconscious bond that existed between her and Reiko as master and familiar, she might be able to influence the kunoichi to take the more dangerous path through the sewers beneath Lyonne…
