Effortless fun...
Added 2025-01-06 15:22:05 +0000 UTCI'm working on putting together a top 10 list of adventure style games that are, IMO, effortlessly fun. There are a few factors I'm taking into consideration when I am determining how "effortless" something is, and those are:
1. Set up and break down time
2. Ease of learning / remembering how to play
3. Game length
4. Table space
There might be some other factors as well, and of course the most important factor is simply how much I enjoy the game.
Quite a few of the games I'm considering are of course smaller in stature, but there are some bigger games like Role Player Adventures up for consideration.
What are some games you turn to when you want effortless fun? What qualities do you apply when determining how "effortless" something is?

For me the Kilforth series comes to mind, my favourite being Shadows. Setup is quite quick after the first couple of times, then you pick a race/class/boss and just head off on an adventure. Resolutions are very dice based but you are only looking for succsesses (5/6 on a die) so I dont consider that to be much effort at all. Its not really presenting you with multiple decisions at the same time to min/max over, so I see it as more that im 'along for the ride'. Once you no longer need to reference the rulebook it flows quite nicely.

My list of "effortless fun" games would include (in random order): 1) Escape from the Dark Castle 2) 7 Moons 3) The two "Bag of Dungeon" games 4) Dungeon Saga Origins 5) Dungeonquest 6) Probably most of the modern reiterations of Warhammer Quest
