"Presumably [Giles] can appear now, if he's dead" - very astute of you, Veggie. The "memory bonus" I referred to in my last comment was Calendar and Angel- interestingly you did at one point (I can't recall how long ago) say "I'm surprised we've not seen that Calendar thing again" but totally understandable if you forgot! Not like they were the latest appearance of your favourite character or anything :P I'm very glad the "previously on" didn't spoil that, at least! Hope you're feeling better soon!

I have rewatched it over a dozen times, and I get more out of it each time. I think you will very much enjoy the rest of the season!

2026-02-17 03:49:53 +0000 UTCI think most people dislike this season because it's just.so.boring. That's extremely common, though, among the last season of seven season shows to point that it's kind of a trope. I love Spike, and even I will never rewatch this season on my own because of how slow it is. If I were you, I wouldn't put much faith into the "reboot" because they are always terrible. I don't think I've seen a good redo of a 90s/early 2000s show yet.

2026-02-17 00:45:13 +0000 UTCYou've summed up more than half my problems with Season 7. No disrespect to people who like it, but I just find it painfully dull; it feels like the season is just perpetually spinning its wheels and not going anywhere, while constantly repeating itself. It also doesn't help that I'm not a Spike fan, so the focus on him doesn't do this season any favours in my eyes - that's also a reason that Season 6 didn't work for me personally. Considering we're almost halfway through the season, it's pretty wild that almost nothing has actually happened. Compare it to the episode 9 of any other season and the difference is very stark.

2026-02-16 19:22:01 +0000 UTCI've gotta admit that I found these past two episodes centered around the First kind of... boring? Some intriguing crumbs were dropped in this episode -- but if a viewer is a bit over the Spike storyline, is there much to be entertained by here? Is Spike's storyline even entertaining anymore or is it just, idk, kind of sad? Theoretically, a story where an entity can use the face of dead loved ones to stir up drama could be really interesting -- but in actuality, the First is just using their faces (and not their actual hearts and souls) and its goals are the same no matter who it's talking to or who's face it's wearing. At least up to this point, there is no Spike / Drusilla / Angel dynamic, or Faith / Mayor, or even Glory / Ben. Past the Conversations with Dead People episode, there has been nothing that interesting about the First itself. BtVS at the height of its powers is spinning a lot of plates in terms of character growth, humor, melodrama, interpersonal relationships, and seasonal villains we are invested in. I'm not sure that season 7 is spinning more than 2 or 3 plates in this storyline. Anyway, sorry to be kind of negative there. I am still enjoying watching along and I do think some stuff was at least introduced in this episode that could go in some very entertaining directions, so holding out hope at least!

2026-02-16 18:58:42 +0000 UTCYea I can’t imagine you would have remembered The First (I certainly didn’t), but it might be worth a rewatch of s03e10, if you feel like it. An awesome callback! And a fun mystery! Honestly I might be one of the only ones that really likes season 7. Not really sure why your brother is giving you a vibe! It’s nostalgic for me because the whole family would gather round every week to watch it!

2026-02-15 20:28:17 +0000 UTCIf you want a non-spoiler reminder of the cult guys and The First Evil, I'll leave it below :) ... In Season 3, episode 10 "Amends", Angel was being haunted by visions and ghosts of his past victims. Giles figured out that it was The First Evil and its minions the harbingers/bringers who were doing it. The First came to Angel in the form of Jenny Calendar for most of the episode, and it ended - after The First trying to convince Angel to "take Buffy" - with Angel attempting to commit suicide by waiting on a cliff for sunrise before Buffy talked him down, and there was a miraculous snowstorm that blocked the sun, presumably sent by the Powers that Be to prevent Angel's death. Don't worry, most people need a reminder lol ♥️ Hopefully that helps!
