Finally caught up with finishing listening to the book club. the quote was from whistle and I'll come to you M R James adaptation now part of the BBCs ghost stories for Christmas that they did in the 60's and 70's. The caravan at Berwick was chilly due to heating not working the evening when I arrived but was fixed quickly when i reported at reception the next day, was a four hour coach trip plus a 45 min bus ride to Leeds. Berwick's a nice place if you like history it's a Elizabethan walled town with some nice pubs and restaurants and a nice microbrewery, went to Edinburgh it was heaving even though it was tipping it down, there was just too many people for it to be enjoyable. The haven caravan site I stayed at is right on the edge of Berwick cost 140 to rent an 8 bed caravan for a week so was great value considering local hotels cost about 60 a night also the caravans are dog friendly so there were a lot of pet owners around. Not sure the interpretation of the dig at the hair is racist as there is no mention of the characters race, very few characters are actually given a racial description in the first edition uk books apart from the Parvati twins and Kingsley though apparently some different versions/editions of the books have racial descriptions of characters and others don't witch is weird.

2025-10-07 03:56:01 +0000 UTCConcerning racism in the Wizarding World. Sorry, for comment spamming, but I want to make it its own comment, since it is an interesting topic. So here is my take: For one, it is surprisingly difficult to define when something "counts" as racism. It is not as clear cut as some people believe, and is debated a lot in the real world. In the magical world they clearly don't seem to discriminate against colour of skin or country of origin. A few examples: we have the canonically black Slytherin Blaise, there is never a mention of slurs being thrown at the Patil sisters (who very obviously are of south asian decent), during the fourth book there was just school rivalry but no negative feelings towards the french or eastern europeans, etc. BUT I would make the argument that this society is still deeply racist. They separate by "blood status" and human vs "half-human". The deatheaters, Malfoy and his posse, Umbridge - they are all 100% racist! So here is how I read Pansys comment about Angelinas hair (who btw is described as a "tall, black girl with braided hair" in the books, since you wondered): We read that comment as racist, due to our understanding of the word. But I don't think Pansys thoughts were rooted in racism. It is just an example of her not being smart enough to come up with a good heckle. So what does she do to participate? She reverts to superficial comments about Angelinas looks. That does not mean that Pansy isn't a racist, just that I would argue that that comment wasn't racist in that world.

It was more than one time, that I tried to like a comment you just read, and ended up just pausing your video... let's blame tired-jetlegged brain, rather than me just having small brain in general... "The twins are just as career oriented as Percy" Veg, I've never seen it that way, but you're absolutely right! Thinking about it, all the older Weasley kids are VERY ambitious when it comes to their career. Percy is the only one where it is super evident, since he chose a more traditional career path, but Bill and Charlie are successful in their chosen path, and the twins put all their focus on their entrepreneurial endeavors. Will Smith is not the greatest actor who ever walked the earth by a long shot, but there is more to him than just the good acting of Bel Air and Men in Black. I'd suggest watching either The Pursuit of Happyness (if you're ready to have your guts wrenched) or Hancock (imo absoluetly an underrated movie that shows more range than you'd expect from a rather silly story line. And yes, I know that choice is controversial) You're Leon recreation jump scared the heck out of me! Traditional german apple strudel isn't vegan due to the butter in the batter. To simplify it: it's basically a puff pastry that is rolled out so thinly you are able to see through it - which is a pain to do and very prone to ripping! So you can totally make a vegan apple strudel (just use a vegetable spread instead of butter), I just wouldn't recommend making a strudel by hand if you want to stay sane…

2025-10-03 14:53:02 +0000 UTCDid I use some of my unplanned 6 hour overlay to watch the book review yesterday? Maybe... Now on to bookclub! I love talking about the weather! Now, I live in a climate that (just like the British Isles) is quite changable, so I actually think it's an interesting topic AND certainly something everyone has an opinion about. No matter how dull people say that topic is, the moment you bring it up everyone has something to say, so I'd say it's a great conversation starter/filler. And I like nature, so I like weather. Horseback riding is really fun, especially if you work with a trainer who really considers the animals well being. I used to have lessons as a kid, and we actually started without a saddle to really get a feel for the horses movements, and he had us lie on our back while riding the horse to really built that trust, and really hammerd into us the importance of grooming the horses before and after riding them. It worked amazingly well! Later we lived next to stables for some years, and I was over there nearly every single day. The others thought my method was weird and esoteric, but I was always way quicker in building a bond with a new horse than the others. If you want to learn how to breath poperly, I would recommend singing lessons! You don't have to be able to sing amazingly to take them, and you can even tell the teacher that your main goal is breathing techniques. But let me tell you: singing is 80% breathing properly (at least) and these techniques stay with you in your daily life! Lucius age is a bit of a mystery. I believe it was mentioned somewhere, that he is younger than Snape (and therefore the Marauders) by quite a bit. But that doesn't math at all. Harry and Draco are the same age, and we know that the Potters died VERY young, so they had Harry shortly after graduating (like a couple years later tops) Did Lucius have Draco while still in school? It's just one of the many inconsistencies in the story... Pretty sure Britain only has Azkaban. I believe there are different layers with different amount of Dementors on them (still very bad!) I think the layer thing was mentioned on Pottermore - or I made it up to make sense of it and it became canon in my head. I truly can't tell you... I always read the "tagging of merfolk" in 2 ways simultaniously: 1. demeaning them into animals, like tagging cattle 2. for me it is a very obvious parallel to the holocaust, when the Nazis forced there "prisoners" to wear symbols showing their "offense" (gold star for jews, pink triangle for homosexual men, red triangle for communists, black triangle for Roma, etc) I don't think you made excuses for Percy. I obviously read his letter very similarly to you, and I am not a Percy stan!

Emma and Dan had great screen chemistry and the way Steve Kloves wrote their scenes together doesn't help. He was definitely trying to make them be a couple btw, he loved Hermione so much and is responsible for messing up Ron and Ginny. If he had his way, he would've made Harry end up with Hermione but obviously he couldn't do that. Also for the record, JK didn't say she regretted not putting Harry and Hermione together. That's a misunderstanding. She once questioned whether Hermione and Ron would've been a good couple in real life. And that's it. No mention of Harry and Hermione but for some reason people took that quote and ran with it.

Anyway still enjoying your reviews! One point not sure if anyone already made re your reaction to Percy Imperiused by Wormtail theory: I am not saying I agree with the theory, but amount of detail about Weasleys in the letter is no proof to the contrary. Remember Wormtail had lived with Weasleys and then in Griffindor Tower as Scabbers for years! He probably knows every sigle Weasley better than anyone else that's not a Weasley. Second point - Imperious doesn't necessarily mean that the afflicted person has their mind wiped and the controlling person needs to know everything. The command might simply be "behave as usual; kiss a** to The Ministry; distrust Dumbledore; hate Harry Potter; write to Ron" etc The imperiused person can still fill in the specifics from their own mind as long as they are obeying the command. Having said all that, I personally am not on board with theory, but still find it very plausible.

On the Harry/Hermione relationship thing...I am one of those who believes they SHOULD have ended up together. At THIS point in the series, it's less about Harry showing interest in Hermione. He likes Cho, I think he's kind of starting to show interest in Ginny too. He's a horny teenage boy, so he's bound to like a lot of girls and not always for the important reasons. Anyway! My opinion is, Harry and Hermione were more compatible, definitely on a more similar level. They were always able to have proper conversations with each other (as opposed to Ron and Hermione always arguing). Harry understood what Hermione was saying more often; they both grew up muggle so they related more to each other. If I'm remembering correctly, JKR did say at one point that I. Some ways they’re more compatible. Totally different topic! I've been curious about this for a while now, and if you don't feel like sharing you don't have to! When and/or why did you go vegan?

As a huge live court fan I really hate the phrase because it usually always means the law protected the accuseds rights. Like with alec baldwin, the prosecutor in that case hid evidence from his defense and it all came out during trial and he was granted a mistrial with prejudice, it can't be tried again, people say he got off on a technicality and its like well yea, technically its completely messed up to hide evidence from defendants, that should never happen no matter who it is. So basically what I am saying is if Percy was looking at this the way others look at that phrase he would think "the law was written wrong to include an underage wizard being able to use magic in life threatening situations, thats the only reason he got off, thats just a technicality he still is guilty of using underage magic outside of school". I am still not a fan of Percy like you are but I find your takes on him really interesting.

2025-10-01 14:42:44 +0000 UTCIn regards to which chapters should be done individually, I think people agree chapters 23 and 28 should have their own book club video, and if you do 15+16, 17+18 and 19+20 as I think you've mentionned previously, then that leaves you with a difficult choice for chapters 21 and 22: they are a bit long, but if you do them separately then it would mean 3 book clubs in a row with only one chapter (with chapter 23). There is also the fact that chapters 21 and 22 go well together and splitting them up would break the dynamic of the story a little. But there's still time to decide before we get there.
