The other thing is the Martian had just been rescued from the derelict ship, and may not have been at full strength (fatigue, dehydration, etc.)

2021-02-10 22:47:53 +0000 UTCEnglish speakers often pronounce the surname Nguyen as something like "wen", though if you pronounce it with the ‘ng’ sound at the start (which is weird for English speakers because it's never at the start of a word), you'll get a closer approximation to its actual pronunciation, so something like ngwen. Anything more than that and you're getting into the territory of learning actual Vietnamese just to pronounce a name :P On the topic of Holden's training, don't forget that he is also ex-military. Not to mention an Earther, which is an advantage compared to lower-gravity upbringings physiologically.
