In the world of The Expanse, the invention of the Epstein Drive profoundly changed the nature of space travel within the Solar System, making it both faster and more economical. The thing that Gunny saw at the end of the episode represents another kind of technological "paradigm shift" in their world - but one that's obviously of a less benign nature.
