K-Pop Demon Hunters - Full Timer Reaction & Review

(This movie is available at netflix.com and I've included some things to help you sync it with my reaction!)

Hey everyone! I've been hearing SO MUCH HYPE about this and now I see why! This movie was AMAZING! The songs were all bangers, like even more than they needed to be, and I love the story and characters so much! The setup and lore are so clever and the emotional points hit so hard. Plus....Demon Boy Band....need I say more?! Hope you enjoy! ~ MH

Ahhh yesss you summed up SO many of the things I adore about this movie too!! 😭✨ The way the music isn’t just gorgeous but is literally woven into the lore and tied to themes of connection and healing just makes everything hit so much harder. I totally felt the same about how each song really reflected the girls’ personalities and struggles while still hyping each other up — Zoey’s chaotic energy, Mira’s cool-but-soft side, and Rumi’s quiet empathy just balance each other perfectly, and it makes their bond feel so real and powerful. 🥹💕 And omg YES, the comedy had me dying (Zoey’s “cawcaw” battle cry lives rent-free in my head lmao) but the emotional gut-punches with Rumi and Jinu?? Absolutely heartbreaking but so beautifully written, especially with how the whole “imperfections = strength” message tied into the climax. The last song honestly gave me chills, especially with that line you highlighted about “the song we couldn’t write.” 😭 It’s such a beautiful culmination of their journey and friendship, and I’m sooo excited about the sequels too!! Also very interesting about Polytrix, thanks for the info!!! And thanks for all your support!!

I love this movie it’s so good. I think the best place to start my comment is by talking about the music since it’s a central part of the story. I love the lore about how music is how Demon Hunters have always protected the world & it’s what gives them superhuman bodies and the magic weapons they use. I think my favorite part of the lore at the beginning of the movie is that the shield exists because the music resonates with people & brings about togetherness. And considering how important connections are in this movie (the connection the girls have with each other, the connections with the fans & Rumi and Jinu’s connection) are I think it’s awesome how music & relationships were integrated into the story. I love the songs not only because they are bangers but because of how the lyrics do a great job of representing the characters & themes this movie explores like how the 1st song shows us what the personalities of the girls are like and how awesome/fun they are which is good to have right after hearing background about the girls from the fans & how they feel about them. How Golden gives us a peak into the issues they personally have especially Rumi as well as insight about their lives. I love how each of the girls have distinct personalities but also match each others freaks especially when they are hyping themselves & each other up as well as all 3 of them being quirky and silly In their own ways like Zoey being bouncy/energetic & having a wacky side, Mira the being laid-back, cool & tough with a soft side that she doesn’t show to most people & Rumi while being confident in front of the fans & during performances she’s actually pretty awkward and quiet/reserved & I think she might be the most empathetic of the 3 when you think about her interactions with Jinu although that empathy is hindrance because of the issues she faces. Although Zoey is the silliest LOL. Something else I like is that while none of their personalities are fake it’s who they are it’s obvious that they have been influenced by their experiences, issues & trauma. The comedy in this movie might be the best part even though I love the characters & themes there are just so many hilarious moments & gags. I think my favorite jokes are anything to do with Tiger especially how he’s slightly OCD about stuff that falls over, the fact that the bird stole the hat from the Tiger, all of Zoey antics/shenanigans especially her random Cawcaw which I guess is her Battle cry LMAO & the entire scene at the doctor’s office. Although I think where the movie shines the most when it comes to humor are all the jokes/what they write about fans of Idols & Idol culture I was especially tickled by the shipping moment. The writers for this movie understand what Idol culture/fandom is like & it clearly made it easy to poke fun at that stuff. Also while it’s not the focus I think there’s slight/subtle social commentary about the negative aspects of Idol culture like not eating enough food even though they need to eat more because they expend a lot of energy being idols I’m assuming because it’s connected to the other negative that I know of which is that idols have to be “perfect” which is enforced with what I think are ridiculous & crazy. I love the journey/story Jinu & Rumi go on through the movie forming this connection because they understand the self hatred they both feel as well as being able to completely be themselves around each other. I think all of those moments really ended up saving the day at the climax of the movie because It allowed Jinu to realize he wanted to atone for his mistakes in the past & is why he saved Rumi as well as Rumi starting to understand that imperfections are okay & you have to face your problems to be able to heal/move forward as shown in the song Jinu/Rumi sang together although at that point she didn’t have the right answer since she talked about it as fixing. It’s so dark to learn about the truth of Jinu’s past & it’s fitting that this happens after the awful & dark moment of the demons impersonating her friends tormenting Rumi & revealing her patterns without her consent. I think this stuff & everything after is the most emotional part of the movie with how distraught she was thinking her friends were leaving her. And yeah the miscommunication the girls have here sucks but it makes sense with the insecurities all of them have & it was only this bad because Rumi didn’t tell them herself I really think if they knew Celine was the reason she had not told them it would not have been nearly this bad. While we had an idea of what the girls had gone through & the internal issues they had especially Rumi with her internalized self-hatred, issues with body image & all that anxiety with her workaholic nature once the Demon King’s voice started affecting everyone it was a lot clearer. Like Mira having trust issues when it comes to her found family because her biological family seemingly wasn’t there for/didn’t support her because she was a rebel and it’s sad that a dark part of herself doesn’t think she deserves a family or Zoey because she has American & Korean roots as well as being Quirky feels like she doesn’t belong and probably that people wouldn’t like her. I love the scene of Rumi confronting Celine about her neglectful parenting because it’s such a real moment especially the idea that Celine isn’t able to accept/love all the aspects of who Rumi is as a person you can really feel the emotion from Rumi’s VA. I think it’s comparable to conditional love or people who end up not having been ready to be parents & I think it’s something people can either relate to or at least understand. Also I think it’s great that something like this can be written so well that this can be relatable to queer folks even if the character is not necessarily LGBT themselves it’s a sign of great writers I agree with people it’s always great to see LGBT/LGBT coded stuff in media. Although this scene does bring up some of the only criticism I have of this movie which is that I think the movie could have expanded on why Celine was like this & thought the way she did as well as some more about Rumi’s mother/demon father and that story I just think the movie would have felt even more complete that way but it’s a very minor criticism all things considered. I almost forgot to say but I like the concept of demons feeling emotions very intensely it fits with this movie. it’s messed up that the demonic voice goes after your insecurities & trauma knowing exactly what would effect you the most (I do think it’s a nice touch that each person hears a demonic version of their own voice). It’s very fitting that we have the stuff with Celine, demons having intense emotions & the issues/trauma Rumi, Mira and Zoey having something to do with emotions, connection or family when those are big parts of the movie as well as being something the girls can understand about each other at the end of the movie. I love the Your Idol it’s so dark & disturbing with the chants at the start and the messed up lyrics about using the hate & sadness of those listening any are going to give them to Gwi-ma. I think the craziest & my favorite lyric in that song is you gave me your heart now I’m here for your soul. there is something so ethereal & beautiful about how Rumi enters the stadium for the last battle I love how much strength she has being at her most vulnerable going and standing against the King of demons because she had the time to realize/understand that all of those imperfections & “weaknesses” don’t make you weak but can empower & give you strength and are beautiful as the 3 girls quickly show. Something I love about this movie is how it makes it obvious how even though they have their problems & Rumi is keeping secrets the girls are extremely close & I think that friendship/love is a big reason her voice was able to reach/connect to her best friends while they were under Gwi-ma’s influence it’s very heartwarming. I love how the last song represents the themes of the story & the characters being all about the idea that imperfections and the things that might make you so called “weak” are not a bad thing & you need to accept and embrace those aspects of yourself rather than hiding that stuff as well as being all about the connection the girls share. I think my favorite line in the last song is “the song we couldn’t write this is what it sounds like” it does a good job of showing the journey the girls went on in this movie, their friendship & the emotion of the themes of the movie it’s a beautiful/poignant part of the song. 1 other theme I love about this movie is how Gwi-ma the Demon King being a very well done representation of the intrusive/negative voice in the back of your head that most people have although depending on the person that voice can be louder or quieter. Since that’s something a lot of people deal with I think it’s cool to see it represented in an interesting & creative way. It is sad but with how Jinu was written his redemption via sacrifice makes the most sense and it’s a there are really beautiful/powerful moment when all Rumi might not have been able to save his life but she was able to free his soul. Also the idea of people being able to give more of themselves to power up the girls even more is awesome & heartwarming. And now I want to say how much I love the designs in this movie the girls have such unique & different designs & outfits that really match their personalities whether it’s the Idol outfits or casual outfits (I think my favorite casual outfits are Zoey’s) but my favorite outfits the girls have are the angelic pure white outfits they get after powering up to defeat Gwi-ma they are awesome and beautiful as they float in the air. I love how the girls are beautiful & stylish but something I appreciate about the designs in the animation is that there Is no hesitation to give the girls facing expressions that aren’t “pretty”. Also I’m pretty sure the demon designs are probably based on Korean mythology it’s cool. I’m glad the girls finally got to go to the bathhouse with Rumi & relax and Zoey crying leading the other 2 to as well is a mood LOL. I love how while this movie deals with serious topics it overall is very positive, optimistic & hopeful showing that Rumi, Mira & Zoey have learned a lot and once again emphasizes their love for music, the fans and most importantly each other. Also it’s nice to know that Jinu’s demonic pet Tiger & Bird are still around & in the human world I kind of hope the girls adopt them in 1 of the planned sequels it would be cute. The animated chibi part of the end credits is really cute & funny & I love that they got Twice of the biggest Kpop girl groups out there from what I understand to do the full version of takedown in the credits since this movie is about a female Idol group & the live footage of the record things is a nice/cool touch. 1 other criticism I saw from 1 person so I don’t take it seriously but it’s that the movie glorifies Idol culture since it has a lot of negatives I just don’t agree because while it does put a positive spin on IdoIs it does have slight social commentary & if anything making more people aware of the world of Kpop can bring attention to the issues/problems of Idol culture which is a good thing. I’m glad there will be sequels to this movie since it will be great to see more of this world & these amazing girls as well as more awesome music I just don’t know how they will continue the story but as long as it has the same quality & has a story that is just as good or better than this movie I’ll be satisfied. Since you & I are both shippers I wanted to tell you that because of a modern-day college AU where everyone is human and Jinu is Rumi’s best friend I discovered that a large part of the fanbase loves the idea of/headcanon Rumi, Mira & Zoey being in a polyamorous romantic relationship with each other (I should have realized people would ship them since I know shippers) and I know this because that fanfiction is about Mira & Zoey who are girlfriends falling in love with their new roommate Rumi. I almost forgot but something else I love about Rumi’s design is that she always wears clothes that cover her entire to hide her patterns almost like a shield but at the end of the movie she is comfortable not covering up her beautiful rainbow patterns. I don’t know if you are into or read fanfiction but I’ll leave the link if you or anyone else is interested https://archiveofourown.org/works/67237909/chapters/173664214 . Also the name of the ship is Polytrix which I like a lot. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3
