A short video for you guys. This one discusses what I'm thinking as I make this master study (aka copy of a better artist). The original painting (at left) is Portrait of Albert de Belleroche by John Singer Sarget (1882).
Master studies are a great way to learn how more experienced painters approach problems. There are no real rules for how to do them, but I always find it helpful to go into them with a goal for what you want to learn. In this case I'm trying to figure out how Sargent got such a real-feeling face with so few brushstrokes.
