This is a really enjoyable film...IF you're a long-term fan of TOS. If watched simply as a standalone movie it makes no concessions whatsoever to viewers who watched TOS only occasionally. Nonetheless, it's full of outstanding moments and character scenes. The visual effects are wonderful, and give the picture a sense of scope and majesty. The Klingons are back as enemies, and Christopher Lloyd makes a great villain. Judith Anderson (the Vulcan priestess) was one of the most respected actors of her generation (she was Mrs Danvers in Hitchcock's "Rebecca" - which, if you haven't seen it, is a great film to watch) and was brought in by Leonard Nimoy, who had been an admirer for years. She had never watched TOS and had absolutely no idea whatsoever what any of her dialogue meant :D Did you spot (former) Yeoman Janice Rand? She was the woman shaking her head in comic disapproval at the state of the Enterprise as it entered space dock. It isn't just ST II and III that are connected. The first three films really form a trilogy. The crew are reunited with each other and the Enterprise in ST I. They lose one of their own in ST II. Are all reunited again, but lose the Enterprise, in III. An epic story arc.
