Why Are These Planes Hungry? (Ad Free)

Planes have long been given personalities by those who love them, thus resulting in millions upon millions of memes since the internet became popular.

Hence, we have these videos of big ol' planes settling down on a runway, opening up their big mouth, then flying off again, completely satisfied.

It’s unclear who started the trend, but the earliest version I could find was posted way back in February, but if you have a prior example please comment below.

Due to the fact that many of these planes are being identified very specifically, it would seem that much of these memes are driven by plane nerds, of which there seems to be an abundance of online.

I would not have known that this plane is called a Beluga, but now that I do thanks to the incredible meme community, it totally makes sense given its bulbous appearance and massive girth.

Of course there’s other types of planes being roped into the meme, and it would seem that each plane is being given its own personality.

A small C-130 has been given the characteristics of a baby, and is often pitted against small C-17s.

And then there’s other genres wherein planes are roasting other planes, such as “the missile roasts the C-17”.

As such, the further one digs into these memes, the further one discovers an entire aviation community dedicated to purely posting the planes they love and their personalities.

It is in this manner that planes are almost treated in the same manner as cats or dogs in other areas of the internet, with plane speak becoming eerily similar to lolcat style captions.

It’s brilliant that a community’s love for certain machines can be so wonderfully encapsulated through meme culture, no doubt bringing other members closer in the process.

The aviation industry has so many lovers of its planes, and as a result the internet has a massive and wide reaching space clearly happy to support itself through hungry plane memes and the like.

I imagine it’s quite similar to train spotting pushed by the likes of Francis Bourgeois, whereby memes surrounding trains and general goofiness are not only accepted, but heavily encouraged as likeminded people support passions surrounding their favourite modes of transport.

In short, the hungry plane meme holds up on its own, but it is extremely well supported by an entire community of aviation enthusiasts who give personalities to other planes, demonstrating a hidden treasure trove of memes and references that are just way too fun to watch.

What meme would you guys like me to give a lesson in next? Let me know in the comments below.
