Why Did Jake Scream Like That?

Adventure Time is a brilliant show.

One minute you’re lulled into a false sense of security brought on by deep worldbuilding and interesting characters, and then the next it hits you with the most traumatising and bizarre visual imagery to ever touch your eyeholes.

This is where “why did Jake do that?” comes in, as it takes a short scene from the show and puts it to the forefront of meme culture.

It all started thanks to endercore19, who took a clip from Episode 4, season 1 and uploaded it on the 2nd of October this year.

The horrific scream itself seems to have been taken from Sonic.exe, as Tails’ scream, as the original clip has Jake yelling “nooo!”.

You’ve probably also seen the “I’ll never understand why bro did that” meme with spongebob from earlier this year, which seems to be the precursor to “why did jake do that?”.

Now, thousands of excellent reanimations and edits of “why did Jake do that” memes have been spreading across the internet, with some even implying him as an eldritch horror.

After all, Jake does have some genuinely unhinged qualities – who could forget his unbridled rage coming out due to his passion for card wars?

At any rate, with the release of Fionna and Cake, there’s no better moment for Adventure Time to come racing back to the forefront of meme culture.

It’s highly likely the show’s release in 2023 has led to renewed interest for its characters, and people are going back and watching the original run from 2010 to 2018.

These fresh viewings are probably reencountering some of the weirder parts of the show, and hence it makes sense that the mannerisms and screams of its main characters would freak out any sane person watching, including Jake acting out of pocket when Finn says he’s getting the Apple Pie first.

On that note, I have a big soft spot for Adventure Time.

Growing up, it was always there for me as a show that didn’t dumb itself down for kids – it treats viewers like an adult with its more mature themes and philosophy, and I love that.

There’s nothing else quite like Adventure Time, even though almost every new show during the 2010s tried to emulate it, so I’m glad to see it gaining further recognition in 2023.

As such, a meme emphasizing Adventure Time’s penchant for horror with the addition of a sound effect from Sonic.exe perfectly demonstrates the traumatic effect the show can have on its viewers, yet also brings an incredible story back into the spotlight.
