It's true, of course, and has the desired effect of reminding people of the queer roots of modern body piercing as a subculture and industry, but it's leaving out the side show performers, sex workers, kinky straight swingers, tattoo culture folks who'd yet to have drawn an "us versus them" line in the sand when they saw piercing as a threat to the mainstreaming of tattoo...
What does that have to do with page 51 of the newest issue of Nodal Points?
I'm not sure. It's early and I'm just waking up, but I think the point I'm trying to make is that the first documented Madison piercing that I've been able to find is on sideshow great Rasmus Nielsen (seen here in a Kobel photo; issue six also has a photo of him that's likely not seen print since 1938) and was named, of course, after sex worker (adult film star/model) Madison Stone, who's now part of the tattoo industry. The artwork for this article was provided by adult/sleaze cinema historian Robin Bougie, formerly of the long running Cinema Sewer zine, tying it all together.
