Sid was a glorified amateur tattooist and piercer; with a lack of professional piercers (in the 1970s and most of the 1980s if you didn't have access to a Gauntlet location, you didn't have access to a "professional" piercer - industry versus subculture) available, and a lack of out gay tattooers - folks like Sid filled the roles as best he could for folks seeking piercing services or tattoos in a non-threatening environment for queer bodies.
While he wasn't necessarily a good tattooer, he was able make his clients happy, and end of the day that's a damn fine thing.
Sid had the tops of his hands tattooed in this snapshot so I'd place it around 1982/3 after his West Coast visit and session with Ed Hardy.
