Mastermind was great until that 3rd act that just went nowhere. Too bad. 2/3s of a great film.

Woof this sounds bad. You wanna talk about an Oscar snub, what about The Mastermind? Great film. Would love to hear your thoughts. More Reichardt on the pod!

I hated this movie too, but especially for the ending. Before the ending and twist I was enjoying the ambiguity about if she was really an Alien, and I thought that felt grounded and realistic in the general schizophrenia of our conspiracy obsessed culture today. Where the movie lost me was when it changed genres like 4 times in the last 25 minutes and the last scene, which felt completely undeserved for the scope of the film and basically is a slap in the face to anyone who sat through it. Ugh

speaking of the cumboys interacting with normal society, have you seen the clips from the late night fox news show 'red eye'. Where Nick Mullen is a guest sat next to John Bolton. One of the most bizarre reality crossovers I have ever seen

Erm. I disliked every film i saw previously by this bloke but thought this1 was fine/okay. Suppose low expectations helped. Surprised/unnerved by your hatred. I enjoyed seeing the girlboss suffer and liked/identified with the 2 gentlemen in the house. Best to leave Oscar/awards out of mind when watching a movie as they matter not.

My mother brought up the Jim Carrey thing to me,I had heard nothing about it before. Told me that it obviously wasn't him and I had no idea what to say. From what she said it seems she was under the impression that Big Hollywood silenced him because he's always speaking out against their evils. I showed her some pictures and she was like ok yeah ok that's him, might've seen some doctored stuff.
As for how this movie compares to the original, besides the fact that that is coming from a mid 00s Korean context, it's also absolutely batshit insane. This is so sedate and tame compares to how that movie approaches the story, not only narratively but aesthetically, it's breathlessly hyperkinetic and vascilating wildly in style and tone constantly. You're never sure up until the moment of the reveal what's true and what's not, and moreover it matters less than the crazy bullshit happening immediately in front of you. Maybe the seriousness of Yorgos invites you to take the ending more seriously, where in the original it feels more a final gag

Guys everyone can see the "twist" coming, that's the point – everything about the movie is telling you they might as well be from different planets, so the "twist" is both huge and meaningless. Same with the giant ending of what was basically a bottle episode. It's supposed to be massively out of scale. Correctly noting all the little details, then using that insight to completely miss the whole is downright "Kael-esq".
