For me, the problem with MAGA-coded conservative culture is that the Maganauts are trying to force one into existence, forgetting the core conservative principle that things must evolve organically. The best example – in the sense of actually being artistic, channelling Malick as it does – I've seen of it is the current Oscar Best Picture nominee TRAIN DREAMS. This really struck me as a MAGA art-house film. I'd be interested in the Will & Luke take on that. It's not the kind of shouty conservatism you seem to prefer to taunt, but neither is it of the more traditional Republican-coded film-making, with its focus on the petit bourgeoisie. Being of roughly the same vintage as Tim Allen, although more Corbynite/Bernie Grandpa than MAGA, some of what you describe about the show struck a chord with me, not least the demotion of Pluto from planet status. What drives this resentment of novelties are strengthening intimations of mortality, I suspect. Pluto is part of the universe we know, in contrast to the unknown destination where we shall soon arrive.

I know it's so common to say this now but the dialogue on this show really really really sounds like a chatbot jesus christ

For anyone looking for more deep dives on Tim Allen's career, Jon Bois did an amazing analysis of Home Improvement in his Secret Base video about the trans-Atlantic telegraph.

Interesting! I didn't say this on mic, but to me it's also encoded as an early 2010s "I fucking love Science" era thing, from that period where people thought it was hilarious to join Facebook groups called things like "When I was your age, Pluto was a planet..." - L

The question is well taken given that, as you say, the grumpy un-PC dad is a classic sitcom trope. But I'd say the show quite explicitly takes this further by having Allen's character incessantly give voice to very specific boomer conservative grievances (the libs have feminized tennis! the they're trying to woke-ify minutemen! the public school teacher just said her pronouns etc etc). - L

Christopher Rufo criticizing TPUSA only means TPUSA didn’t like his audition tape.

This episode left me a bit mystified: what exactly makes this show “conservative” in any meaningful sense? Old-fashioned, maybe. I mean, sure, it doesn’t sound very good but isn’t the “grumpy, un-PC but loveable Dad” a sitcom trope?

I had to go google Tim Allen prison snitch while listening to this . Do they have an episode where tim Allen discusses the life lessons he learned in prison after his 1978 sentencing? Most artists are pretty self serving in their autobiographical texts, so I’m sure if he did, it’d be both propaganda for his hard-won-world-view and gesture towards a great arc of redemption,

I’ve heard some of my conservative family members whine about the “Pluto no longer being a planet” thing too. It’s definitely in the realm of the “it’s different than what I learned in school, so it’s Wokeness run amok” type of grievance.

Glad to see him getting right back to work after his resignation from Sir Keir Starmer's government.

I love how venomous Will is on the topic of Tim Allen and the audience that watches him 🤣
