I was mostly thinking of the early 80s in the Breznev comparison, but the point is well taken. There's also a parallel story in the final decade or so of the USSR which Western elites don't want to remember, which is the spirit of reform you see with the Gorbachev years. - Luke

Re: Carney’s speech, I just hate that a white man representing an OECD country echoing what Southern leaders have been saying since the Bandung Conference in the ‘50s was what was required for those points to be taken seriously. I’m glad that dissonance was covered in this episode

I love the movie-focused podcasts as much as the next Michael & Us devotee, but ones like this are also really important and needed. Thank you

the ICE QR Code pitch came, unsurprisingly, from hasbara addict Richie Torres of NY.

ngl, I prefer movie episodes especially given that Luke hasn’t seen THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE yet.

Excellent discussion, guys. Helped me with my own thoughts and feelings as well.

Stubb is running his mouth on international stage about ”value based realism” while his own party has inflicted EUs worst and selfmade recession in Finland with procyclical cuts on welfare state, together with openly racist The Finns party in the goverment. Neoliberal ghouldom will continue and Trump will even provide it with some easy symbolic victories, giving the ”serious politicians” an opportunity to grandstand against his vulgarity. At the same time the domestic politics keep creating demand for more Trump-type huxters to provide a sense of solution for the endless humiliations and hopelessness created by the system. Same as it ever was, just more and faster.

Thank you from Minneapolis. We hope to host you guys someday after we win.

I don't wholly disagree with the entirety of the comparison, but I will say: comparing the Carney stagnation with Brezhnev/Kosygin orthodoxy of the Sixties, Seventies, and Eighties--incidentally, the highpoint of material wealth relocation and civilian investment in Soviet central Asia (and through much of the USSR that didn't see the targeted benefits of the earlier postwar boom) and the furthest the pendulum ever swung in the direction of legalized regional autonomy and political power among Soviet nationalities and polities below the principle republics (well, before the War of Laws and the shooting started after 1990)--seem a little unfair. To Brezhnev, mostly. Not all nostalgia is justified, naturally (whether towards Kosygin or, well, Gigantes), but like the long shadow cast by Roosevelt's New Deal, people have a long list of reasons for holding it. Then again, on top of being an Asian person born in, well, Asia, I'm also a naturalized citizen of the country to the south Carney was aiming his particularly vague, wishy-washy guns at, and not a Canadian, so maybe it's lost on an audience like me or I'm being too unfair to Carney. Still, nice episode, boys.

Very excited by the call of action to join the NDP. Even more excited the moment where someone has to say in congress “…well it started as a quasi-ironic Michael Moore Podcast.” I had a few Canadian comrades come out to the anti ICE rally we had in Seattle last night and I asked one about the Carney speech and they said they were surprised, but the thing is that a liberal politician can be more honest about the way the world works, but nonetheless he’s being honest from his bourgeois capitalistic perspective and there needs to be a force that can be honest about the world from a socialist perspective. Which is why I reject Michael Moore’s approach because he says he’s from Flint but he’s from Davison! He’s from Davison!

Was hoping you guys would cover the Carney speech. Your Substack piece was great, Luke!
