E1 boys! Luke, nice that you were part of that 1000th episode of Chapo! It was really good. Loved the voice work.

Dear Like and Will, I’d love to hear your take on the Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho. I think you might find him interesting https://youtu.be/zSfihxsp9MM?si=DczZGFF2BLQtobOZ

Anyone who remembers Hedwig and the Angry Inch will understand why right wingers would be triggered by Symposium.

Dear Luke and Will, I would like to point out what I see as a grossly dishonest edit in an otherwise impeccable Sy Hersh documentary. In the segment where Hersh speaks about his disappointment in Assad and says he did not expect him to oversee torture, the visuals show headlines from his London Review of Books articles. This creates the misleading impression that he is referring to — or retracting — that reporting. I think this is a very dishonest piece of editing. I don’t blame you for drawing the wrong conclusion, but he is not retracting his reporting. Luke is right that the documentary would benefit from being slightly longer and from engaging more directly with controversies such as Hersh’s Syria reporting or his Nord Stream story. I think the reason Hersh has been relegated to Substack is that today’s media landscape is even more concentrated than when he was starting out — much like the dynamics you discuss regarding the entertainment industry and film studios. As a result, there is even less space for the kind of independent foreign policy journalism he practices.

I have access to a DVD of Michael and Me, I can rip it and send it over later. Any preferred format/place to send to?

Casablanca really is my favourite Warner Bros. Discovery franchise.

There is at least one other alternative response to Michael Moore that you haven't convered... George W. Bush: Faith in the White House (2004) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0464806/mediaviewer/rm915315968

I was in charge of organizing the Socialist Alternative contingency of the anti war protest in Seattle on Saturday. I spent like all my free time working on it from like Thursday night until Saturday evening. There were like 65 people there, it was mostly people from various left groups, like 18 were us. Of the people I spoke to only one person who was like, a young person who came because they heard the news and were looking for next steps to learn how workers can build the anti war movement, which is who I’m looking for at protests. There was one pro Trump Venezuelan expat arguing with people. There was one Spanish speaking person who didn’t know what was going on and of the roughly 50 organizers there I was the only person who could speak to her, which was cool for me because it’s why I taught myself Spanish. If a member of Michael and Us nation is looking for a place to put their political energy in a positive place, we should be having public meetings across the country this week. And I’d be amazed if we weren’t also building meetings in Canada and the UK. And if you’re in Germany, Sweden, Brazil or a non English speaking country you could check out international socialist alternative to see if they’re doing something in your country. One important note is we’re unaffiliated with Socialist Alternative in Australia and I can’t confirm if they have any Michael and Us fans.

hi Michael & Us — chiming in with a small…correction? detail? idk. Just wanted to point out that UChicago’s late Allan Bloom, of the Committee on Social Thought, is the translator of the most commonly assigned edition of Plato’s Republic, which includes a long “contextualizing essay” about Socrates as essentially a Gingrich-style conservative

David B. Hobbs

Trump didn't even make 50% of the vote in 2024 - makes it all the more galling that everyone (not just Republicans) portrayed that election as a thumping victory
