If you do do an All in the Family episode please, please do it as a comparison with one of the Johnny Speight series featuring Alf Garnett, of which the first was Till Death Do Us Part. The Yanks modelled their successful adaptation on this more controversial yet much-loved BBC production.

I must admit that I for years thought that Spinal Tap were a real band. I was 5 when I saw the film so give me some grace in that. Honestly, I thought they were a real band until like a couple of years ago. Speaks to the quality of the film and the acting. The authenticity

None of my other leftist pods drop on the weekends so I’m really counting on M&U for some Venezuela analysis

Not sure if this has been brought up by anyone else yet, but in 1999 Kenny G released a version of Auld Lang Syne called “the millenium mix” that drops in soundbites from every boomer’s favorite 20th century moments (most of which are assassination announcements), but in 2001 he followed it up with the “freedom mix” which takes the 1999 version and adds soundbites from 9/11 and children performing the pledge of allegiance. A truly fascinating work of neolib kitsch, link here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OpoGeL6fl9A

Stayin’ Alive is excellent.

I revisited the movie a few weeks before Reiner’s death (after 20 years) and found myself surprised that some of my favorite bits were actually outtakes from the DVD.

I think A Few Good Men would be great for the podcast. I haven't seen it since I was a kid, so can't comment on whether it's actually good at all. All in the Family is certainly worth watching as a historical artifact, if not for the endurance of its comedy. Some interesting analysis of it in Jefferson Cowie's Stayin' Alive: The 1970s and the Last Days of the Working Class.

Cool stuff. Never thought I'd hear from anyone here about Digable Planets or Shabazz Palaces lol

I’m good friends with Ishmael Butler from Digable Planets and Shabazz Palaces and he’s a staunch Kenny G defender fwiw, Real Eyes Realise

I've heard reliable sources say that that much-maligned Pauline Kael quote was actually presented ironically – it was Kael knowingly making fun of the aloof liberal take on Nixon voters. For what it's worth!

The 2000 or 2001 DVD issue of This is Spinal Tap has a wonderful set of extras, including numerous outtakes (I didn't realise the film could have been about 4 hours long), my favourite of which is Derek Smalls's cameo in a movie thriller, where he gets shot before credits roll.

Ciaran Colley

If you ever follow up with more Reiner, you should check out the Rockford Files episode where he plays a lecherous egomaniac quarterback for a minor league team. Probably his finest moment as a comic actor, and Garner does a great straight man to Reiners sustained over the top schtick.
