Chapter 4: The First Field Mission - Part 1
Added 2024-07-10 02:08:26 +0000 UTCThe QuinJet hummed softly as it cut through the night sky. Arthur Thompson sat quietly, his eyes closed in concentration as he focused on the subtle energy flowing through his body. The past few weeks of training had honed his control, but he knew he was barely scratching the surface of his potential.
"Thompson," a sharp voice cut through his meditation. "Mission briefing in five."
Arthur opened his eyes to see Agent Maria Hill standing at the front of the jet, her expression stern as always. He nodded acknowledgment and stood, stretching his muscles in preparation for what lay ahead.
As the team gathered around the holographic display, Hill began her briefing. "Listen up, agents. We've received intel on a suspected Hydra cell operating in this remote mountain region." A topographical map materialized, highlighting a series of caverns and a small compound. "This area has significant strategic value due to its proximity to several key military installations. Your mission is to infiltrate, gather intel, and if possible, neutralize the threat."
Hill's gaze swept across the assembled team, lingering on Arthur for a moment longer. "This will be Agent Thompson's first field mission as part of Project Vanguard. I expect you all to work together effectively."
Arthur felt the weight of expectation settle on his shoulders. He knew this mission would be crucial in establishing his credibility and furthering his cover story.
Hill continued, "You'll be working as a four-person team. Agent Daniels will lead the operation."
A grizzled man in his late forties stepped forward, his eyes appraising Arthur with barely concealed skepticism. "Twenty years in the field," he growled. "Let's see if your fancy enhancements can keep up, rookie."
"Agent Parker will handle tech and communications," Hill gestured to a younger woman with short-cropped hair and an array of gadgets strapped to her tactical vest.
Parker gave a curt nod. "Don't worry, I'll make sure our comms stay hot even if Hydra tries to jam us."
"And finally, Agent Wilson. This is his second field op, so keep an eye on him."
A fresh-faced agent barely out of his teens grinned nervously. "Ready to show what I can do, ma'am!"
As the QuinJet began its descent, Arthur took a moment to center himself. He called up his status screen:
[Current Integration: 5.45%]
[Abilities:
- Enhanced Perception (Improved)
- Basic Cursed Energy Manipulation
- Rudimentary Infinity (Barrier Creation)
- Basic Cursed Energy Sensing
- Basic Reverse Cursed Technique]
It wasn't much, but it would have to do. Arthur knew he'd need every edge he could get on this mission.
The team deployed under the cover of darkness, rappelling down to a small clearing half a mile from the suspected Hydra compound. As they gathered their gear, Agent Daniels laid out the plan.
"Parker, set up our mobile command post here. Wilson, you're on perimeter security. Thompson," Daniels fixed Arthur with a hard stare, "you're with me on point. Let's see what those Vanguard upgrades can do."
As they moved through the dense forest, Arthur extended his senses, reaching out with his Basic Cursed Energy Sensing. The world around him came alive in new ways β he could feel the faint energy signatures of small animals scurrying away, the dormant power in the ancient trees, and...
"Wait," Arthur whispered, holding up a hand. "There's something ahead. Artificial, definitely not natural."
Daniels raised an eyebrow but signaled for the team to take cover. "What kind of 'something,' Thompson?"
Arthur concentrated, pushing his ability to its limit. "It feels like... a web of energy. Probably some kind of proximity alarm system."
"Nice catch," Parker's voice crackled over the comms. "I'm picking up faint electromagnetic signatures consistent with a sensor grid. Wouldn't have spotted it for another fifty meters."
Daniels nodded grudgingly. "Alright, good work. Parker, can you disable it?"
"Negative," came the reply. "It's too widespread. We'll have to find a way around or risk alerting the whole compound."
Arthur studied the energy pattern, an idea forming. "I might be able to create a temporary gap in the field. It won't last long, but it should be enough for us to slip through undetected."
Daniels hesitated, clearly weighing the risks. Finally, he nodded. "Do it. But if this goes sideways, it's on you."
Taking a deep breath, Arthur reached out with his Cursed Energy. He visualized the sensor grid as a delicate spiderweb and began to carefully manipulate the energy around a small section. Sweat beaded on his forehead as he strained to maintain the complex barrier.
"Now," he gasped. "Move quickly."
The team darted forward, slipping through the gap in the sensor grid. As soon as they were clear, Arthur released his hold, sagging slightly from the exertion.
"Impressive," Wilson whispered, eyes wide. "Is that part of the Vanguard enhancements?"
Arthur nodded, not trusting himself to speak as he caught his breath. He noticed Daniels watching him with a mix of suspicion and grudging respect.
"Don't get cocky," the older agent warned. "We've still got a long way to go."
As they continued their approach, Arthur felt a familiar warmth spread through him:
[Minor Recognition Gained: Field Team]
[Enhanced Perception slightly improved]
[Current Integration: 5.45% β 5.5%]
The team pressed on, with Arthur's enhanced senses proving invaluable in avoiding traps and patrols. As they neared the compound, however, their luck ran out.
A group of Hydra agents emerged from behind a rocky outcropping, weapons raised. "Intruders!" one shouted. "Sound the alarm!"
Time seemed to slow as Arthur's enhanced perception kicked into high gear. Without thinking, he threw up a rudimentary Infinity barrier, deflecting the first volley of bullets.
"Take cover!" Daniels, returning fire.
The forest erupted into chaos as both sides exchanged gunfire. Arthur focused his Cursed Energy, creating localized barriers to protect his teammates while using his enhanced speed to flank the Hydra agents.
In a blur of motion, he disarmed two opponents with precise strikes, using his basic understanding of Cursed Energy to amplify the force of his blows. Nearby, Wilson struggled with a larger Hydra agent. Arthur reached out, using his fledgling Reverse Cursed Technique to momentarily disorient the attacker, giving Wilson the opening he needed.
As quickly as it had begun, the skirmish was over. The Hydra agents lay unconscious or restrained, and Arthur's team regrouped, breathing heavily.
"Everyone okay?" Daniels asked, his eyes scanning for injuries.
"All good here," Parker reported. "Nice moves, Thompson. Didn't know the Vanguard program could do all that."
Arthur shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant. "I'm still figuring it out myself. The abilities seem to adapt to the situation."
Daniels holstered his weapon, his expression unreadable. "We need to move. That firefight will have alerted the compound. New plan: we go in hard and fast. Thompson, you're on point with me. Let's see what else those enhancements can do."
As they prepared to assault the main compound, Arthur felt another surge of warmth:
[Minor Fame Increase: S.H.I.E.L.D. Field Operations]
[Basic Cursed Energy Manipulation slightly improved]
[Current Integration: 5.5% β 5.55%]
He allowed himself a small smile. The mission was far from over, but he was proving his worth. Now came the real test β infiltrating the heart of the Hydra base and uncovering whatever secrets lay within.
