Your Japanese Animes: Chainsaw Man
Added 2024-02-29 01:25:26 +0000 UTCI had to drop my streaming services before finishing this show but i saw enough to get the basic gist of the characters and general feel of it. It's pretty kickass for what it is, that being your basic shonen monster fighting anime for 15 year olds, but with really cool animation and a lot of yucky violent gore.
I couldn't really get too invested, partly because i'm too old to care about this shit, and partly because i jettisoned Hulu out of my life just as it was getting good. I like the main character and i especially like the girl character with the horns, she's cool. I also appreciate the straightforwardness of the protagonist's adolescent motivations.
I get the feeling from these early episodes the show has some pretty interesting themes that set it apart from other standard animes of it's kind. If i ever get to finish the series and if it continues to go in the direction i think it will, i may end up having some very insightful things to say about it. But I'm in no hurry to do that because Hulu sucks and i never want to see another anime as long as i live.

You're right about the show's themes. It tackles subject matter that is more interesting than most Shounen Jump manga. But for me what really sets it apart is the character writing. A common criticism of Shounen Jump properties is that all the female characters suck or don't have important roles. Not so in Chainsaw Man. All the female characters feel like people and not waifu bait meant to fit an archetype of a kawaii cartoon girl. And SURPRISINGLY everyone loves these girls despite how flawed they are. It reminds me of Eva in that way, but ironically, those female characters have become sort of flanderized over the years it seems. I truly believe that this author is the perfect counter to all the fake bullshit and inspire more authentic stories because he's so popular right now. And then maybe, just maybe, anime can be saved
