A couple details I got from TV Tropes. https://ew.com/article/2015/11/23/spotlight-boston-globe-key-clue/ The scene where Crudup says he sent a list to the Globe years ago and the scene where Keaton was confronted by the fact that he buried the story when he was head of Metro. Those two scenes were based on interactions that the -screenwriters- had when they were researching the movie. Macleish told the screenwriters that he sent the Globe a list of names in 1993. The screenwriters found the old article and asked Robinson about it. Sadly, the victim with the needle marks on his arm, Patrick McSorley, did in fact fatally overdose in 2004.
