Early Sept Studies + Notes + Video Process

OKAY so I thought this would be a little follow up of the How to Study guide but this wasn’t planned at all lol. I wanted to study how to keep movement and gesture in my drawings using video references. So I went to YouTube, typed dance video and put it at 0.25x speed, which is the slowest. When I saw a decent looking pose, I would pause and draw it.

I recommend this practice because often times, a lot of photographs are staged! So it lacks the energy that people actually have. Compare the photo of a ballerina to the video of a ballerina on stage. One is still, staged and may read sometimes as stiff whereas one represents the actual motion. The flows and curves in real time! Go look up Olympic sports, watch and pause videos of them in motion, watch dance videos, figure skating and so on! You may be able to see motion where you missed in photos ;)

I thought this would be a great example of my not so good studies. These are shit studies (not the vehicles ones, I did those days ago!) SO UGLY!

If you watch the video in the attachment, towards the very end, you see me fumble on that one squatting pose, thats when I gave up 😂 in my mind I was doing good, then I looked at it as a whole and saw how horrible it looked.

Moral lesson is that you may be too caught up in a single part of the drawing and fail to see the whole drawing. Endeavor to zoom out or just step back once in a while so you see everything as it is. We tend to get caught up when we focus on certain parts so this is a good way to step back and regain yourself!

Im going to continue studying these dance poses, I have to nail keeping movement in poses, especially action poses (like dancing!) for a certain project so that’s my motivation!

I hope folks are liking the Study Guide as well! As always I’m open to questions!! Take care <3
