Midnight Pals: Worldcon Drama

[at space coven]
Hugo Gernsback: I've had enough of this!
Gernsback: for too long, my precious hugos have been besmirched by scandal and controversy!
Gernsback: but no more!
Gernsback: i'm taking charge now

Gernsback: no more chinanery!
Gernsback: no more shenanigans!
Gernsback: and most of all
Gernsback: no more clownish buffoonery!
[immediately slips on a banana peel]

Gernsback: no more clownish buffoonery!
Gernsback: the buffoonery ends here!
Clive Barker: oh but hugo
Barker: the buffoonery is the whole reason that we even watch the hugos
Gernsback:
Barker: i love a spectacle haha
Mary Shelley: the spectacle is pretty great

Gernsback: regardless! no more buffoonery!
Gernsback: we're going to have a buffoonery free worldcon for once
[puts up a '1 Day(s) since clownish buffoonery' sign]

Gernsback: ok so first
Gernsback: for the next worldcon, we're gonna have nice simple cowboy there
Bram Stoker: yes!
Stoker: YES!!!
Gernsback: i thought you'd like that
Stoker: like it?
Stoker: i love it!!

Gernsback: like i said, a nice simple cowboy theme
Gernsback: a nice simple western expansion theme
Gernsback: a nice simple manifest destiny theme
Barker: ahahahah oh my god
Barker: hugo, you might wanna take down that sign
Gernsback: huh? why?

Gernsback: a manifest destiny themed worldcon is exactly the light-hearted, fun sort of event that will really lift peoples spirits
Jules Verne: huh i'm feeling a little iffy on this
Gernsback: we're going to wear cowboy hats with gears glued on them
Verne: Hot diggety dog, i'm all in!!!

Verne: this is gonna rule, i love gears on hats!
HG Wells: but jules, manifest destiny is bad!
Verne: but
Verne: but the gears

Wells: remember the war of the worlds?
Verne: yeah?
Wells: ok so think about what if aliens did to us what we did to colonized peoples
Verne:
Verne:
Wells: i mean
Verne: i'm thinking

Verne: wait a second
Verne: WAIT A SECOND
Verne: if aliens did to us
Verne: what we did to colonized peoples
Verne: THAT WOULD BE BAD!!!
Verne:
Verne: on the other hand
Verne: god i really want a hat with gears on it
Verne: this is a real ethical dilemma

Verne: i just don't know what to think
Gernsback: let's ask brandon sanderson
Brandon Sanderson: well uh
Sanderson: if you ignore all the bad parts of a thing
Sanderson: then actually i guess you could say it was good
Gernsback: there you have it

Somehow this isn't surprising XP

A few years back I was thinking about volunteering at Worldcon; I checked out the names of the board, and was surprised that I had worked local cons for years in the 90s with a huge percentage of them. All old white cishet boomers. As GenX, I grew up listening to everyone talking about manifest destiny & shit as a good thing. I THOUGHT though, by now, they'd have gotten a clue - but no one else their age has, so idk what I was thinking.
