MaterialX now available, USD & FBX improvements

Thanks to a sponsorship from SideFX, we've been working on our USD and FBX download options for models, improving compatibility with a wider variety of software including Houdini.

This includes the infamous "where are the leaves?!" issue :)

As a part of the process, we needed to create separate static variants of all our geometry-nodes-based assets, such as many of our trees and grass scatter systems. So we decided to take the opportunity to improve how they are treated in Blender too. This has not yet been implemented in our add-on, but the idea is to cater to both people who just want a plain static clump of grass, and those who want to scatter the grass on a surface by simply dragging it from the asset browser. Or, those who just want to plonk a tree down in the their scene, and those who want to modify the geonodes parameters to customize them. This update will be in the next release of our add-on in the next month or two.

MaterialX available for all textures

MaterialX (.mtlx) is an open standard for representing PBR materials in its own file/asset outside of any software format (e.g. .blend or .uasset). Much of the 3D industry has adopted, or is in the process of adopting, the standard.

All of our textures are now available for download in the MaterialX format, which is now the most compatible format to use for Unreal and several other non-Blender tools.

Feedback

If you actively use these formats in your work and are familiar with the best practices of how they are created/used, we'd love to hear from you. If you have any feedback for changes we could make to improve them, please join our Discord and let us know :)
