My Book Situation! And also George Michael for some reason.

Hey friends,

Hope you’re all hanging in there. Before we get started: that George Michael tweet is unrelated to the newsletter, but I saw Kendra share it and it felt spiritually correct u know? (Btw, my roommate says he has met TWO people who did not know George Michael was gay, which is a sort of puzzle that I keep turning over in my mind. How??)

Tomorrow on Gender Conceal, we’ll be sharing my recent chat with Denne Michele Norris, who you know from Food 4 Thot and Electric Literature and also Gender Reveal and Gender Conceal. In tomorrow's ep, I also talk about my Book Situation—but because I cannot stop talking about my Book Situation, I will also tell you about it right here and now.

My Book Situation is that at a completely unknowable time on Tuesday, a deliveryman is going to show up to my house with 1440 copies of Sex Change and the City. This was not part of the plan, due to the fact that 1440 copies of Sex Change and the City cannot fit in my apartment. And yet! It is now happening! Whether I like it or not!

Due to the overwhelming desire to “be able to use my apartment without being crushed by a book tower,” I am now amping up book promo efforts by roughly 5000%. Whereas before I was planning on 1-3 book events, I am now quickly throwing together an entire TOUR?! Which feels completely deranged given the state of the entire world, and yet, here we go baby let’s do a zillion trans events for the sex change joke book why not?!?!?!

So! Please watch this space for tour dates. Or, if you’d like to be proactive, I DEEPLY welcome tour ideas and suggestions: cities, venues [doesn’t need to be a bookstore], local events we could partner with, fun local authors who might want to be “in conversation” aka riff onstage, etc.

Relatedly, I do not know how to get the word out about this book and tour beyond this newsletter and podcast(s) because of how so much of media has collapsed, and I welcome your suggestions there as well!

FWIW, I cannot stress enough that:

  1. I literally did this to myself, insofar as I decided to start a small press which everyone knew was probably a bad idea.

  2. I realize that a lot of issues are life-or-death right now and this is the opposite of that!

  3. I actually feel completely unhinged promoting this book at all In These Times and hate to do it!

  4. It’s simply so many books lol.

Also, I just made another discount code, and now you can get 25% off your order when you spend $42 or more (that’s 2 copies) with code “2SHOES” this week only! That’s not mentioned in the episode due to I just made it up right now.

Hey, one more book thing, I’m so sorry. But you can now preorder Sex Change and the City in Canada via AllLitUp! Huge!

Okay, I really do not have time for Links & Stuff so here’s a link to one of the best articles in internet history. I haven’t read it recently but I TRUST it holds up and will be devastated if not.

THANKS FOR READING ALL THIS, SORRY ABOUT ALL THE BOOK TALK!

Here’s your weekly Rhubarb.

Photo: Simply a beautiful picture of Ruby sitting. Her whiskers are huge!

And Puffin, ofc.

Wanna come to Edinburgh? If so (can't imagine) check out Lighthouse Books, best bookshop in Scotland. Because I'm sure what you want now is to put all those books on a plane :)

Clary Binns

ah, unfortch this would be a book tour, not a comedy tour

Tuck

Ok I also have an idea for a bit (is it called a set) to do at the show: analyzing romantic/sexual relationships through the lens of some of the tools in Love in a F*cked Up World

Eliza

would love to see yall again in dc (or in baltimore)!! i don't remember what the size of the union stage event was but other places in town include potter's house (bookstore and event space, i think it's small)

Malaya Press

I'm so glad you liked it!!! I reread it after I sent the newsletter and it temporarily cured me

Tuck

Everyone has so many great suggestions. I, however, just read the entirety of "one of the best articles in internet history" and have to say you're correct; it's ridiculous, horrifying, and brilliantly crafted.
