ON THE (DUMB) PATREON CHANGES

More on what the Patreon changes mean later, and what it means for the Delta Green Patreon, but for now, briefly:

1) If you pay through Apple iOS, I would recommend you change to web payment.

2) I will be forced to charge a monthly subscription instead of per post. Most here pay about $5-$6 per month for 5-6 posts (and I've been giving away 300+ pp full colour PDF books!), so if most pledge $4-$6 monthly, things should remain as they are.

3) If revenue drops dramatically, I'll have to figure out if it's affordable to even do it. I love it, but I have a ton of other paying work to do! And now, what's REALLY going on:

I do well on #Patreon. I have almost 2k patrons. I imagine I'm in the top whatever count of #TTRPG people on the platform. I see a lot of comments about this and that. But I also did many years in #SF #tech. Here's what's likely going on:

#Apple has always taken 30%. #Epic sued them for several billion over it, and Apple is cracking down on people that circumvent it. Do they deserve it? The app store is REALLY fucking expensive to run, but is it that expensive? Probably not. But they certainly don't make their profit from it.

Patreon is funded by venture capitalists who are ALWAYS looking for an exit. They want to sell the company and cash out. That is their entire purpose in life. There is no other goal for that company. Artists rights, making artists earn a livable wage, blah blah blah. Corporate PR. Nothing more.

They are on their 10th round of funding. And their "space" — organized payment solutions for artists with some simple database management will be valuable ground for...not that much longer. Soon, someone will ship an out of the box home solution to it and Patreon will be dead.

Dead also equals "all the VC money goes up in smoke", so they are very likely trying to bind up all the loose ends in the company, put a bow on it, and sell it all to some horrific concern which will try to exploit it, and in doing so, almost certainly cause it to fail.

Of note is this: Patreon has been trying to kill "pay per post" for years, and have now folded it under the "Apple is demanding 30%!" umbrella to blame Apple for this too.

This removal is almost certainly for other reasons to goose their profitability to make a more attractive purchase target.

So, here's the truth. Due to the nature of "line must always go up" businesses, ALL concerns like this will always exist in 3 phases:

1) NEAT!
2) Wait, this was working, why are you doing this?
3) Dissolution.

Patreon was at NEAT! for a long time. Longer than should have been possible, really. But now, we're clearly at the end of phase 2.

Next up will be "Patreon has been bought by <HORRIFIC COMPANY> but no changes are planned!"

Then out come the chainsaws. Artists best get used to it.

How do I feel about it? It sucks horribly. Trust me, I have a TON to lose from such an outcome. But how I feel about it and what they are going to do have absolutely zero relationship.

The goal of Patreon is not to support artists, it never was, it is to sell the company at a multiple of what was invested.

Hey Matt. I’ll make an announcement when I know more. No changes needed on your part yet. Cheers!

Dennis Detwiller

Was completely unaware of this, i generally use the web interface for patreon because I am an Old and need a big screen :D Do we need to make a change to our subscription now or will you let us know when to make a change? As with others, if you find somewhere else to put your stuff (ko-fi maybe?), will follow there!

Matt Jones

Cheers!

Dennis Detwiller

I will not cancel my pledge, and i am on Apple. Your posts are very interesting.

bouik bouik

I hope so, John.

Dennis Detwiller

I love being able to follow you and others on here and have no issue paying for it. If Patreon does go “tits up” will we all be still able to somewhere else maintain this deal we have with you?

John Dickie

Happy to follow you wherever. This is already such a niche within a niche, would be happy to do a play-by-post where we mail in cash and get new previews of upcoming books to edit.

Ryland H Garnett

Cheers, Ross!

Dennis Detwiller

Thanks for giving your thoughts! If you do decide on an alternative service I’d be happy to support you guys anywhere 🙂

Ross M Taylor

I’ll remain here for the foreseeable future. No plans yet.

Dennis Detwiller

Thanks for always being so frank about the reality of this industry and the situations affecting it. What other avenues are you looking into? I know some other creators who mostly do video content are going to get in with YouTube but that doesn’t quite help you here.

Grady

Cheers, Stuart!

Dennis Detwiller

I'm here for the long haul.

Stuart Dollar

I guess it's going to work like kindle on Android (15% fees) then... 😔

Marco Menarini

Same thing here. I wish I could disagree with any of it, for the sake of the creators I back, but I can't. This sucks.

Rev. Zee

Cheers, Sean!

Dennis Detwiller

Cheers, Filthy Monkey!

Dennis Detwiller

Thanks for the explanation, I had no idea this was happening.

Rodolphe

was completely in the dark about this, thank you for the heads up! such a bummer pay per post/thingy is much more attractive than per month for me - but delta green will keep me around no matter what. Praying pateron doesn't go down the tubes but you're right 2 see the writing on the wall

NotJarred

I clicked the like button but I didn’t really like the cogent analysis! I will be looking forward to the next way to support creative ideas.

Sean Whittaker

Cheers, Henrik!

Dennis Detwiller

Seconded. Wherever this ends, I will follow and keep supporting.

Henrik Garde

Very true. The enshittification will not be televised. Will keep supporting you, here or elsewhere.

Filthy Monkey

I am not surprised at all by this. Glasd Cannon Network made a transition to Supercast about a year ago or so and it works a lot better. Hope you can find an option soon that works for you.

J. Tuttle

Cheers, JM!

Dennis Detwiller

Can't speak for others Dennis, but whether it's here or elsewhere. I'll be there, your Patreon is by far the best value I've gotten on this platform.

J M

Give it one or two years and we are transferring our funds via secret dead drops to you.

Skox

NP Shoggothic. I hope people stick around.

Dennis Detwiller

Well, this isn't the greatest. Thanks for clearing this up Dennis, I've been getting a ton of emails about this from other creators all morning. Appreciate you!
