THE ABORTED DELTA GREEN VIDEO GAME FROM 2000

Someone posted about this on Reddit, so I figured I could share the presentation kit produced for Flying Lab's 2000 attempt to make an X-Com style Delta Green video game 24 years ago. (Keep in mind in 2000, these graphics were pretty darn good...it was a LONG time ago).

Flying Lab were wonderful partners with great ideas, and the game was a fantastic mix of X-Com and distorted sanity mechanics (kind of like Eternal Darkness).  But alas, no publishers bit, and the project was cancelled.

The video game license has been recently re-issued to another company (though not exclusively), but I long ago learned that video games/tv/movies exist in the realm of dust and shadows (sometimes indefinitely) until they actually exist...or not.

For instance, did you guys know that in that same year (2000), Gale Anne Hurd (co-creator of the Terminator) optioned Delta Green for television? Instead, we got the horrific teen sci-fi "drama"...Roswell.

So it goes!

Don't underestimate the CS people in the community. With enough passion, we can run doom and wing commander on everything :D With the source code, it's probably easier to recompile and switch graphic libraries to make it run, but if you want to try on your end, I think installing VirtualBox with Windows2000 would do the trick. https://www.bing.com/search?q=windows+2000+virtualbox&qs=n&form=QBRE&sp=-1&lq=0&pq=windows+2000+virtualbox&sc=11-23&sk=&cvid=C6C5A84CC823434E91F59C5684487CD4&ghsh=0&ghacc=0&ghpl= The alternative (but you would probably need the help of someone because it's a pain), would be making a docker container running on windows95, so it would be able to run on any machine (mac, win, linux, bsd) https://github.com/felixrieseberg/windows95/blob/master/docs/docker-instructions.md

Marco Menarini

I doubt it would even run on anything, it was 23 years ago.

Dennis Detwiller

I probably know the answer, but since the project has been canceled, and even if a new one ever comes out, it will be rebuilt from the ground up, is it possible to release the source code on Git Hub or the demo of the pre-alpha? I saw a cd from there and it would be fun to see how it works.

Marco Menarini

That disc is a DVD with video clips from the demo we built. I'll dig up the files.

John

No. No idea. I recall talking with him briefly once.

Dennis Detwiller

Do you remember the artist who did those sketches? I have no idea who that was!

John

Much appreciated.

Ben W Bell

It's actually transparent, so I'll have to photograph it on a light board. I'll give it a shot!

Dennis Detwiller

Can we get a good photo/scan of that Insect from Shaggai x-ray image? I can see that being very useful.

Ben W Bell

A glimpse into development hell, where ideas go to die...

Ken

I’m going to hold you to that, Liam!

Dennis Detwiller

I honestly hope that this happens someday. As a young new fan, I dream of a way to bring the tone of this game to other mediums. The writing y’all have made for this game is truly incredible. If I ever become a billionaire, this would be a dream project for sure.

Liam O’Brien

Yes. The Bureau: XCOM Declassified… from 2013, a Cold War Era with intel gathering pushed to fore Theres even an xcom clone with a creept cold war vibe called Phantom Doctrine. Then there is the mythos style monsters taking over the world game called Phoenix Point. God, a no holds barred Delta Green game would be absolutely brilliant.

John Dickie

No clue.

Dennis Detwiller

Wasn't there an XCom reboot that had some Delta Green / Majestic / Men in Black type vibe to it? I swore I remember something between the classic 90s UFO Unknown era and the much more recent revival. One in the early 2010s that had dudes in black suits and game reviewers making X-Files comparisons. But I've also been taking a lot of cold medicine this week, so....

Midnight Platypus

Wow this is a fascinating piece of DG history!

kin242

I’ve always loved the idea of a Delta Hreen TV show with known/quasi-known roles. The sketchy detective in Law & Order. The guy with unexplained from Chicago Fire. etc, etc.

Michael Bourgon

They did indeed.

Dennis Detwiller

This is actually where I first learned of the existence of "Delta Green" as a concept, though it would another decade and a half before I discovered TTRPGs/CoC etc

William Hobson

The idea that we could have had a show will now forever haunt me.

Rasmus Paulsen

As long as the checks cleared, I'm happy for you!

Cameron McNary

I'd definitely buy anything playable with the DG trademark without a second thought.

Robert Wilson

Man, I love X-Com! If there had been a Delta Green game like that, I'd play the hell out of it.

Collin Burkhart

Nope. Nope. Honestly, all the answers are probably "Nope". It never really went anywhere. Cheers!

Dennis Detwiller

So do You use those graphics somewhere else? Is agent Carter used somewhere else? Do you get some finished mission/levels? So many questions!

Wojciech Kobza

That would have been awesome! Love the Overlook mouse surface!

Paul Haban

Thanks for posting about this, been curious about what that was since 2004

Greg Parsons

Probably for the best they went with Roswell. Katherine Heigl wouldn’t have made a good Agent Alphonse.

Bret Kramer

I don't even know if I have a CD drive....

Dennis Detwiller

I was just thinking about how cool an Xcom-like DG game would be. Glad to hear I'm not the only one and that game devs are interested, too! If only there was some way the contents of that CD could be leaked...

Jake P

I think about a Delta Green TV show all the time. Anthology so the characters have a chance to die/go insane. It would be amazing. XFiles meets True Detective but with way less ambiguity about the horror.

Sky DeBoever

Bugger.

J. Tuttle

Generally you sell the rights and hope for the best. Such structures don't really exist in those mediums, unfortunately.

Dennis Detwiller

That would be an instant buy from me. Hopefully whatever happens y'all have enough control over it to keep it from becoming something totally different with a DG label on it.

J. Tuttle

Well, maybe some day. That is not dead etc. etc.

Jordan Etherington

Zero doubts about that. It's gone downhill significantly. I'm just glad there are still some good ones every once in a while.

Trung

Man, I love the turn-based X-Com games. Would be awesome to see an updated DG version someday!

Chad Swenson

The industry is borked.

Dennis Detwiller

This reminds me a lot of the The Thing game (try saying that three times fast)

Skam

There's climate for DG in the video game sphere again. Look at the Man of Medan series. Something like that would be perfect.

Trung

I had some direct dealings with James Cameron building apps for Nat Geo in 2014-2015, and he had nothing but amazing things to say about Gale. I only spoke with her once. But Cameron is not someone who spreads praise lightly.

Dennis Detwiller

Great ARCHINT, Dennis!

Gus Diaz

Reminds me , I saw a photo on FB the other day - In Aliens, when Vasquez gets caught in the vent shaft, and has to shoot the alien close range with a pistol, the actor couldn't get the shot done, so Gale climbed in and put the gloves on... The close up shot you see of the pistol firing in to the xeno's head is Gale Hurd pulling the trigger. The caption read "Gale had extensive shooting experience and felt comfortable dealing with the pistol in close quarters for the shot..."

Duran

I always wondered about this project! It's a shame that the project didnt work out, I wouldve loved an xcom style DG game.

Dillon Stockman

*spits coffee* GALE HURD... wow. So, I personally think that the world jumped in to a bad timeline in 2013-2015... but now I know there was another jump when Gale didn't make Delta Green as a TV series.. But of course back then no one was doing what you can do on HBO or Netflix now with the higher tier content. Thank you for sharing!

Duran
