Zappa. One of THE greatest guitar players. And like prince, he keeps that in his back pocket alot. I heard on xm that Alice Cooper said he was in the room when Frank showed Jimmy Hendricks some licks and told Jimmy you can feel free to use that.

A 1976 video of Frank Zappa playing the song Black Napkins on the Mike Douglas show clearly shows him tapping with the side of his pick and the 1975 guitar solo on Pojama People from the album One Size Fits All features a guitar solo from Frank that is so phenomenal it sounds like he was tapping there as well. These all occurred well before the first Van Halen album came out in 1978.
