It’s worth checking out the album version, for the simple sake of immersion, and this is a song you want to be immersed in. The story is of the birth, growth, and death of a town along the Telegraph Road in the midwest. The music so brilliantly and beautifully follows the lyrics. Knopfler’s guitar work here is some of his best. And yes, hit a full album by Dire Straits - if I had to choose one, ‘Making Movies’ would probably be it, but ‘Dire Straits’ and ‘Love over Gold’ are both amazing choices. Dire Straits were huge in the 80s, but they’re still underrated.
