I've seen in interviews where Van has said that the "water" from the man with the sunshine in his eyes is just water and not whiskey, but the word "whiskey" comes from an irish phrase "uisce beatha" (pronounced ish-kay bah-hah), which means "water of life", so...

Session musicians, none of them had charts or had heard the music, just played. Do the title track or Sweet Thing.. Title Track has a part near the end where the band backs down and grooves quietly, then Van starts humming and the band picks up his melody and comes back in strong - one of the best musical moments on any record.
