For the microscope, you might turn the base around and add some weight so the working area is directly over the ESD mat. Alternately something like Ultimat from Static Solutions can be cut to size - you can order partial rolls if you contact them. If you don't have one yet, a Static Field Meter can be a very interesting tool to use to see how sufficient your ESD solution is, and where the danger areas are.
