Usually it's difficult to find out everything about an unknown transformer: Turn ratio, inductances, losses, interwinding capacitance etc. If the basic idea works out as I imagine, it'll just be another function to implement in software. It could generate a known 50 Hz sine wave on one side, measure the output and even electrically load it ...
