I think general purpose cnc machines don't need encoder feedback, because step loss is almost always audible. But since I am still pursuing my ideal-machine-agenda, I think I'll use these hybrid stepper motors with built-in rotary encoders.

Proper glass linear encoders on the moving parts of the machine would be even better, but that would be a huge overkill, wouldn't it?
After trying no less than 11 CNC shops I just got the first quote for the base plate, that I could afford. It will be made from C45 steel only, but if I invest another 50 bucks in a few camping cookers and oil I should able to harden it very nicely.
