Although female, I also had a teenage coming of age Ayn Rand libertarian phase! Having also been a Republican and a working R political consultant in my youth, it always confused me as to why libertarians allowed themselves to be associated with Republicans since (A) most Republicans were vicious and deliberately mean behind libertarians back and (B) Libertarians don't believe in big government. So the fact that Republicans were actually big spenders- just on things they liked- conflicted with the Libertarian ethos. Now, as a Lefty, seeing this association persist into the Trump era drives me up the wall.
