Freshwater Selkie

Making his way through basalt gorges.

The first image is the version I like best, the second is the image without screentone, just the lines, and the third image is my first pass at screentone, that I came back and gave it a second shot about a week after.

I will have to check that out since that sounds really cool to play with! I had done some inktobers last year where I used digital watercolors that had a lot of texture and even bloom for tones and then used Clip Studio to turn them into screentones. Those are still some of my favorite personal art pieces thanks to the soft tonal variations/texture in the watercolor that I couldnt get with just flat painting or airbrushing the grey tone. It will be really cool to see you experiment with that technique in the future since the use of scanned watercolors/inks turned into screentones could really suit your art, especially in your backgrounds. Its already been a huge treat(to me) seeing you play around with these patreon pieces so I am always excited for more.

So far I've avoided some of the photoshop filters because some of them display with a moire pattern where you can see a sort of thin white grid. With scans I have a measure of confidence that they'll work fine in print. If you've ever seen Naoki Urasawa's Manben documentaries, the one where he interviews Takahashi Tsutomu is great, Tsutomu does all of these ink/watercolor tones then scans them and turns them into screentone which makes for a really cool effect that I want to try something like that in the future!

Oooo thats super cool! With how small some of the screentones have been i assumed it was through photoshop filters but it makes sense that the halftoned images youve been doing have been is fine and delicate because they are from scans. πŸ˜„

Thank you Bao! I'll take a look at the halftone brushes! The screentone I'm using so far is from physical pages I've personally scanned.

I love the selkies design!!! Are you doing your screentones in photoshop via filters? I don't know if they are to your taste/the style you are wanting for these images but I love and reccomend True Grit Texture Supply's halftones for photoshop. Their halftones feel more analogous, making it feel like it was scanned from a older halftoned illustration/comic. They have a few halftoned brushes in a free stuff pack if you sign up for their email (and 20% off if you want to buy the full set). They even have pressure sensitive brushes for shading which i found was super useful for some of my own halftoned illustrations.
