The Day Japan FEARS The Most: $1 Trillion Disaster

Hey guys,

I'm absolutely delighted to announce the earthquake documentary is finally out on Abroad in Japan.

A huge thank you to each and every one of you for supporting us and making it possible.

As I mentioned before, it's the single most expensive video we've produced in 12 years and I hope you'll agree it was for a worthy cause.

When we set out to produce this documentary, the main focus was actually Tokyo. We wanted to dig into the preparations the city had made in anticipation of the mega-earthquake.

And yet, on our shoot in Noto and the town of Wajima, we were absolutely shocked to find the town had been completely destroyed - despite being barely covered by the media.

If this documentary does one good thing, it's share the town's story with the world. It's been severely neglected and I hope the coverage this project brings, is able to somehow do some good. I hope to return there in 2025.

We also explore Tokyo's insane $2bn underground cave, meet Governor Koike and experience a terrifying earthquake simulation.

Enough talking from me though, please watch the documentary for yourself!

And we've still yet another video to follow before Christmas. (And one thereafter).

Thanks guys,
Chris

Is there somewhere we can donate for the rebuilding in Wajima?

Emily

Just watched this. Thank you for your incredible work and empathy and how technically flawless the vídeo looks. Keep up the good work!

Joana Martins

This video actually made me sign up on patreon just to start this membership. Well done, Chris! Amazing work, totally impressed with this documentary.

Irene Astria

This was honestly outstanding! You can see that you have clearly mastered your craft as a film maker/producer/presenter. It was so interesting to see all the steps they are taking to prepare, truly a unique situation. Well done Chris, super proud to be part of the community helping to produce such works.

Hayley Khan

You are so talented, Chris! I love watching you grow and create. Thank you to everyone involved in this fantastic production for putting a spotlight on Wajima. Hopefully the citizens will receive the much needed support very soon. I genuinely enjoy your work and hope this opens some doors for you to get the recognition you deserve.

Jenna

Congrats Chris! Absolutely outstanding. You always say, you're sarcastic side is in the way for such serious topics. But honestly, I think you excell in these serious videos and I hope to see more of them in the future (not hoping for more disasters though!)

Kerstin

This was great. I had hoped the recovery for the region would’ve been further along. I got the feeling the people in Wajima couldn’t see any light at the end of the tunnel yet.

Wietse van Bruggen

Finally got around to watch the documentary. Incredible work Chris, very moving stuff but necessary to shed light upon.

DinoKōyō

It was an incredible documentary and a stark reminder of how we all need to remember to help each other.

Christina

really well done. Have you considered starting a crowd funding Charity for Noto? It's kinda hard to donate from abroad.

Hirami

This was so well put together, genuinely wrapped up in it from start to finish. Only criticism is that it was kinda short, any chance on a patreon exclusive or bts? Would love to see more!

Josh Martin

I have friends in Yamada in Iwate, and having seen the damage that remains almost 14 years after the Great East Japan earthquake, those images of Wajima less than a year after the Noto quake had some power. Thank you for taking the time to report on this.

Adam

Incredible video. I love your travel and food stuff, but these docs are on a whole different level. Incredible.

John

Great Job as always Mr Affable. By coincidence (?) the B1M channel also published a video about Tokyo preparing for earthquakes, but definitely from a different perspective. Nevertheless if anyone is interested you can go check it out too.

Cassio Hui

Just want to say as an Alaskan who has experienced many an earthquake, when people say “oh the ground shakes it’s kind of fun” it really isn’t, it really is serious. Y’all did a good job of conveying them and the PTSD behind them!

William

It feels so wrong to sit here in my house on my couch and watching these people living the way they are. I remember when there was a tornado that ripped through my city. I volunteered my help to people that lost everything, their homes, cars and literally all their clothing. They had nothing. Then I would go back home to a house that was heated and everything. Like even though you helped out as much as you could, it never feels like enough. It was truly heart breaking.

Corey Ross

The scale of destruction in Wajima is crazy, especially to still be living with it when we've seen such swift recovery from other disasters in Japan. I hope the documentary helps shine a light on Wajima and the situation improves for the local people. Terrific documentary as ever, interested to see what topic you cover next.

Luke Beaman

Thanks for the links to the businesses you featured in Wajima. Immediately started looming for the Kirimoto Lacquer shop when you had them on. Their works are beautiful! Keep up the great work Chris. Keep being the Film maker we all know and love.

Joshua Mannix

Just finished watching your documentary now. Really shocking scenes and disappointing to hear that the Japanese Government aren't helping as much as they can. There was an anime convention in the UK called DOKI DOKI Manchester that raised funds for AID FOR JAPAN (supporting victims and orphans from the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami of 2011). AID FOR JAPAN has now closed for good and so has DOKI DOKI Manchester as of last year. Wish there was a way to put on an event similar to DOKI DOKI Manchester to raise money for those impacted from this earthquake, or for AID FOR JAPAN to come back and redirect funds to this earthquake.

The production quality for this film was so high, that I was struck the most by how short the credit roll was. Only one page? I was expecting dozens of crew to make this happen. Good show, Chris. Storytelling is your strength.

Richard Frangiamore

I honestly thought you were on a green screen for that flood reservoir when you dropped the trailer last week 😅. Another great documentary though Chris.

Jaziem

Proud to have chipped in a bit for this video, man. God damn it hit hard. I really hope the people from Wajima get some good fortune their way

2Phan

Awesome documentary Chris and team. Thanks for shining the light on Wajima. Didn’t make the news here. Hope they recover and get back to some kind of normality.

Kevin Cromarty

Awesome documentary! The Wajima section legitimately brought me to tears... Though I would love to see a longer cut or even the full 30min of the interview with the governor of Tokyo Yuriko Koike 🙏

Blex

And we are watching it now on the projector in our home 👏🏽

Koen Manusama

Merry Christmas Chris and until next year 🎄

Koen Manusama

Great documentary Chris! Would be great to see some follow-up on Wajima some time down the road.

Tommy

Great documentary, so heartbreaking ❤️‍🩹. Your best video of the year!

Lieke Verheijen

Thankyou for shining a light on this, on the stuff I never even comprehend when thinking about an earthquake. What I loved was the Japanese approach and the sheer will, determination and togetherness of these communities, they never give up, it’s extremely admirable. Thankyou for shining a light on these stories.

Matthew Gibbons

I can't wait to watch it when I'm home, thanks

Cameron Swift

Just watched it. Thank you for this awesome documentary! I really felt for the people of Wajima and hope they'll be able to recover❤️

Lyria Blackwood

This is absolutely heartbreaking, I silently wept through a lot of it. I might have been through depression but this is immensely emotional and still, fascinating in its own right.

Eric [UK]

Just finished watching it. I can't put into words how heartbreaking those scenes from Wajma are and what those residents have been thought. Chris, I hope you and the team are incredibly proud of this amazing documentary!

Becky Jay Sharp

That would be a game changing decision 😂

Abroad in Japan

There are very few YouTube videos I would take the time to play on my living room TV. Abroad in Japan has created most of them.

Eric [UK]

WAIT THE CAVE IS REAL!? I thought it was CGI in the trailer!

Eric [UK]

I was in Kanazawa on Jan 1, 2024 when that earthquake hit. It was surreal. We were on the 9th floor of a new hotel so the building moved quite a bit. Kanazawa seemed to have much more modern buildings and wasn't hit as hard as Wajima (being 100km away) so the damage was more superficial. End of 2019 we were in Kobe and visited a center built after the kobe earthquake/fire. It had an earthquake simulator like in the doc. And my wife remarked after Kanazwa that it was very very accurate.

Alxa

congrats Chris on the highest quality YouTube documentary! now when do you launch your own snack box brand in collab with Johnny Somali?

Peter Varga

Congratulations, Chris! I look forward to watching it.

Michael Taylor

Everything you do is 'worthy' Chris. You take great effort and care to share with the world all that you find interesting, beautiful, sometimes whacky, but always fascinating and often hilarious. I thank you for that. Long may it continue. ♥️

The Vernes

Thanks for your high quality content! I really liked your other documentaries so i will most likely enjoy this one too.

KeganiJay

So proud to support your efforts in bringing tragedies like this to light.
